IS Putting larger wheels on a car going to add milage or reduce it.
im going from 16" wheels to 18" wheels, travelling long distances am i going to get further kilometers to a tank. any one here know what the out come is from updating wheels to larger sizes..better on fuel economy or worse than B 4. my theory is that a larger wheel travels a longer distance than a shorter wheel thus putting the speedo out and reducing the effort to travel a long distance thus adding more kilometers to the tank of petrol. Don't know if im 100% corret anyone with more information on this idea would obviously know what the answer is...

my guess is that mileage will seem the same, but will be better, as the speedo will be wrong and will think you mhaven't gone as far as you actually have. you may have suspension and body clearance problems with taller tyres.

If you get the right size tyres the rolling diameter of the 18's would be very close to if not the same as the 16's. Changing tyre diameter will alter the speedo way more than fuell economy.

I had a mate a while ago who put larger diameter tyres on his rodeo ute.
It ran like a DOG. Robbed all his torque just to turn the wheels around. Bigger diameter means harder to turn around.

16 to 18 wont be that noticable, i done just that and the speedo is about 3 k's faster at 100 kmh.

If you put the proper tyres (matching the diameter of the old tyres ) it will be the same.
For example if original tyres were 215 65 15 and replacement should be 225 50 16 or 225 45 17 or 225 40 18. There is a calculator on this site to find out the correct tyre to keep the same rolling radius for different size RIMS!!!!!

I just upgraded this week from stock 16inch to 19inch and the rolling diameter is the same, hence no change in the speedo at all.

Wider tyre, more ground contact so more friction, but probably harder compound with the 18's tyre so maybe they somehow ever so slightly cancel each other out to a degree..... I reckon f**k all difference really.

Technically they are heavier so you will have a marginal decrease in economy and a marginal increase in brake wear and tear.

I just updated from 15" (Yep, very small ) to 18" and I feel my car is going slower than the speedo says...But it also says I got a whole 100kms more :s
