Hi all,
I've got my engine without sump or head and I've removed the timing cover/guides/chain. I've got a new chain, and main guide as well as the Tensioner guide which I discovered had cracks in it near the base. I have a couple of questions. The AUX sprocket has a guide mark on it.. I didn't think it mattered were it was pointed as the other end is a spiral worm drive... it appears to have been pointed at the mark on the crank sprocket. IE the two markes appear to have been pointed at each other when at TDC. Is that correct? (please see photo.) Second question is one of preference.. should I put the head on before the timing cover? that way I can have the cam and sprocket in place to hang the chain off. What order do you good folks do it? |

May be a worm gear drive but it's still relative to timing. From memory the aux shaft points to the crank mark as you've mentioned.
Peronally if you want the timing cover not to leak, I'd put it on before the sump or head. The timing cover is a (unt of a setup on these motors. Just make sure you have the long dampner on and don't brake it dropping the head back on

while your there check the play in the aux shaft
also the aux and crank marks must be pointing at each other, also once chain is installed there is a mark on the cam sproket that had to be with on the right side of the head 2 degrees within the rocker coverseal level

Thanks guys,
I got it now.. was a fiddley barstid to do by yourself.. I had to put a box with a shifta on the block loop the chain on that till it was tight on the sprockets then put the gaskets in and slide the cover on with the two chain guides slotted into it.. seems to have worked. Doesn't seem to be any lateral slop in the AUX shaft so that's good news too. The chain and all the chain guides except the tiny bottom one have been replaced .. and the front main seal is likewise new. If this position is perfect TDC, I think now might be a good time to slide the balancer up the keyway and see if its TDC mark matches the engine. (if it doesn't should you get a new one or is just marking it to match OK?) |

in that position the cam sprocket is not tdc

Out by about 90 deg. Also with the charger I would recommend using a Vernier Gear Sprocket so you can adjust some of the timing on the cam.

Thanks, yes I'm gonna get another cam and a vernier once the charger is and I can see what is needed. Most cams for boosted cars are for Turbo and centrifical SC, not much for positive displacement chargers like the m90 so might need to get a custom grind.

I don't know if it's my eyesight - isn't the cam sprocket out by 180 deg ??
If that's the mark on the exhaust manifold side ?

I just stuck the cam sprocket there to hold the chain up.. I'll do it properly tomorrow when I put the head on.

well either way turn it over by hand/socket slowley to make sure everythings clear

Hell yes, I've done a few engines in my life though this is the first time I've had the timing cover of a ford OHC i6, turning over the engine before starting after work like this has been well drummed in. I'ev seen what can happen when you get it wrong.
I have two workshop manuals here, and I'm measuring twice to cut once. |

Perhaps this will set minds at ease.. It did for me.
Head is on, cam is in and sprocket is on.. lots of Hydromar and red locktight used... I put some yellow oxide in the timing marks so they stand out more (couldn't find liquid paper) As you can see, they all line up. I'm still gonna turn it over once the rockers are on though. The only thing that concerned me, is that there is very little slop in the chain despite the tensioner not being in yet. I have put this down to the fact that the chain is brand new as are the guides including the tensioner guide. Hope I am right, but can't think what else it would be if I'm not. |

Interesting tidbit..
My gregories manual says to torque the head bolts to 40nm and then turn them a further 90 degrees. While doing that, I used my torque wrench to see just how tight that was.. in actuall foot pound/newton metres. Turns out it's 70 foot pounds/94nm. I had oiled the threads and bolt heads (and cleaned out the threads before hand) so it's pretty accurate, but interesting... all the bolts were within a couple of foot/pound torque from each other when they'd reached the 95 degree point. just FYI, obviously you are not supposed tighten torque to yeild bolts going solely by the torque used, but still interesting to know just how tight they are when tightened as per spec. |

that 90dg stuff is s**t without a dwell on it, use the three stage torque up so there all the same...

I agree with green machine. Though people have been doing it the 90' way for years so don't stress.
