Hi All
recently put a CMS stg 2a cam/head package on my falc. cant rap joe from cms enough on his service, value and workmanship. car goes like a cut cat. but my problem/what i want to improve, is getting into that lovely powerband example - flatting it from stop, the car winds up, as its a gli i have no tacho, but at what sounds about 3-3.5k rpm it all comes on and the car absolutley flies. but below that its still a bit of a slug after probing more experienced minds than me im going for a 3.7 limo diff and manualising along with thermofan conversion that should perhaps solve it. but ive been sniffing around a bit and somehting i want to know is this im running a straight pipe exhaust. no mufflers. yes its loud as f**k etc etc, but i was recently informed that to get the best out of my car both stock and especially now with a cam and some headwork, ill need to attach at least some kind of muffler to generate some backpressure, as with a straight out system i have none, which is why the car is a slug from the line so i want to know what kind of muffler firstly, ive been told turbo mufflers i.e straight through glasspack? is a good bet, but i dont get how that would help as its a straight through muffler? and is there any partucular brand or type of muffler that is best to use to get the best gains, or even entire cat-back system to use. when i bought the car it had, and still has, some genie headers, and when i do the exhaust ill be replacing the cat with a 100cspi on from venom so for all those who wen tl;dr, will adding muffler to generate/increase backpressure help with off-line acceleration thanks

taking the piss
try a full redback 2.5 with one muffler and a hotdog resinator. will give you a good note with little drone. not too pricey also aussie made.

iv had a redback on for coming up 2 years and still is fine, still has a fair amount of the black paint on it from when i bought it, and i get it fairly hot aka give it a caining.
also if you drive longer distances very often an exhaust should last ages. i drive 40ks to work and 40ks home....gets it hot so removes all the moisture

the back pressure thing is a myth, but you definatly need a mufler to make it sound nicer...
ive got 3" system on mine with high flow cat and mufler (basically straight through) and off boost the car still pulls better with the 3" system then it did with the 2 1/2.. not saying you need a 3" but the i think your problem under 3000rpm is your tall 1st gear in the auto and the 3.08 diff ratio, combined with the characteristics of an aftermarket cam.. what an aftermarket cam gives mid range and up top, it will take from the low rpm.. its a trade off, loose some bottom end to gain alot up top.. a 3.45 or even 3.77 will make it come alive..and still cruise reasonably well... otherwise a manual gear box will fix everything. . |

yeah ive already got changes to those two (diff and gearbox) in motion
so what specific type of muffler is recommended? a straight through muffler, a sports muffler?
