hey guys, I'm doing the timing cover gaskets tomorrow, and would like to know if this is the right puller for the job. By the way, I've got an ED 6 cylinder.

That'll do fine. I'm just putting my timing chain cover back on, and used the same puller. Just be careful when you put the three bolts in that you have it all square with the motor, I've put one on a little sidewards and when I turned the centre bolt it ended up bending it. I’ve found the easiest was is to put the three bolts in finger tight, wind the centre bolt in finger tight and slowly tighten up the three bolts until they are very tight, then use the centre bolt. Most of the time just using the three outside bolts will loosen the balancer and the centre one will pull it the rest of the way off.

Thanks for that guys, i'm travelling down to my dad's factory to use his hoist i for the day to do a fairly decent service, and it would have been a pain to get there and figure I have the wrong part! Thanks again.

Right type of puller... Wrong bolts in the package though.
You will need 3 x M10 bolts. Longish (120mm I think mine were) to reach all the way into the balancer. I got the bolts from Bunnings. Just the gold coloured high tensile bolts will do the job. |

Hate to be the put a dampener on you spirits. I had one of those pullers I found the centre bolt too small & too course a thread and it stripped the thread in the puller body. ended up borrowing one with a large dia, fine threaded centre bolt that worked effortlessly.

The entre bolt doesnt need to thread in - there is a little cap which sits on top of the centre bolt and pushes against the end of the crank....

I think in my kit like that, I found that I could only get 2 bolts in and lined up, but it still pulled the balancer off no problem.

With a course thread the puller tries to pull too much per rotation of the centre bolt, a fine thread takes more turns and eases the balancer off slowly.

And if you're running the centre bolt down inside the crank (ie. with crank/ballancer bolt removed) - MAKE SURE THE END OF THAT PULLER BOLT FITS / BOTTOMS PROPERLY INSIDE THE CRANK BOLT HOLE AND IS NOT BINDING ON THE THREADS INSIDE THE CRANK!!!

would'nt it be just as easy/safer to leave the centre bolt in, and just remove the washer??

That's what I did when I did mine a couple of weeks ago. I unscrewed the bolt till it was nearly all the way out and then bolted the puller on. Wound the puller till the balancer hit the head of the bolt, undid the puller and then the balancer slipped off easy. |

The balancer should pull off over the top of the bolt as long as you have removed the large washer.. I've found that you can damage the thread if you don’t have the bolt screwed in a fair way.

dont 4get to apply some grease to the thread of the puller centre bolt

Hmmm - I think I've just discovered that I did mine the wrong way  duh-OH!! Driving the puller against the bolt head is obviously the right way to do it tho I didn't realise it at the time - aargh! - I am half Irish after all but it's still embarassing.
