Im liking the factory sound from my 6cyl falcon, nothing.
However i want the benefits of a free flowing exhaust, but dont want the usual sound you hear on most peoples car, is it possible to go a sports exhaust with clever choice of mufflers and get a perfomance increase with minimal noise? |

Easy, go extractors, high flow cat, mandrel bent 3.5 inch pipe all the way out to a high flow sports inline muffler......... and buy ear plugs. Problem solved

I got a 2.5" sports exhaust on my eb 6.
I got it installed with both mufflers. Not a resinator or hot dog to keep the noise down. Its quieter then most aftermarket exhausts even with pacemaker extractors. Sounds good under full load too. Has a nice powerfull note. Not heaps of exhaust drone. |

you could get your exhaust done in the same configuration as std.. resinator, centre mufler, rear mufler.. just with aftermarket 2 1/2" muflers and pipe.. it might be a tad louder than std but will still be quiet..
i remember when i was at mitsubishi the 380 had a 2 1/2 or may have been 3" from factory, pretty big pipework for a factory car and was quiet as a mouse..lol... |

what combination of 2 mufflers would be suggested for comprimise between best flow and minimal noise?
Going by the results of this muffler test im thinking........ eg. a wide body straight thru and a Tri flow......although a tri flow seems to be only 2db quieter, but alot more flow restrictive http://autospeed.com/cms/title_Giant-Mu ... ticle.html |

whats your experience with a single muffler, and 2 resonators?...... ive found resonators dont really do much at all

any mufler that is straight through will be loud/some noise..
eg: my 3" system had a straight through hot dog, straight through mufler and straight through rear resinator and it was just legal on 90db.. imo, if you want it to be quiet like std??? chambered muflers with larger pipe diameter would be the way to go.. |

I have a 2.5" Lukey exhaust with 2 mufflers. 1 mid and one rear. It is louder than stock, but not as loud as some other 2.5" systems I have heard. No drone and it is rather quiet withing the cabin. Can hear the nice note when going through the tunnel though.
My f**k front left bearing noise was louder than the exhaust on the freeway.

i just brought a 2.5inch bolt on redback exhaust from the cat back. 1 muffler and 1 resinator i think or 2 free flow mufflers. has a nice rumble but its also not too loud. just nice and doesnt drone. a tad over street legal. most of the noise is between the usual cruising rpm's 1400 to 2300 rev's. completely up to what you want. even just take the rear resinator off the stock system and it gives a small note. drone free (:

ok cool thanks everyone for replies, looks like 2 x tri flow mufflers (chambered?) will work for what i want
i thought maybe a large straight thru plus a tri flow would be ok, but i had an older car with a single tri flow and it was very f**k loud, so the straight thru wouldnt do much to help kill the noise I wonder what design are the factory mufflers?....... assuming baffled type? |

I made my exhaust system, except for the Pacie 4480's.....but it is as loud as a std XR6 system.....more noise comes from the 3" pod.
It's a twin, side by side 2 & 1/4" system.....no drone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJTh9F3Vgg0 This is a dyno run....in a shed....my car. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yr7rpxG6YLU This is an FG XR6 ute.....with an exhaust and stuff.....louder than mine.

dude well done on the skills to make a custom exhaust, but the vid makes it sound like a top fuel dragster
have you got any other vids, and more importantly, what mufflers did you use? |

I would go 2 chambered mufflers if you want it quiet.
I made my exhaust with a hooker aerochamber and a 12" glasspack, was okay for the first month then just got louder. One of these days I'll work up the enthusiasm to buy another proper muffler instead of the glasspack
