Hey guys.
I've got a bit of a random idle of my EF. When I start it in the morning it's fairly smooth (considering the engine - It's stage 4) but sometimes it runs really rough and there's a noticable sideways shake in the car that you can feel rocking you around at the lights. It seems to do it more when the car is hot. Also when you're driving around and first stop the idle goes real lumpy - lump lump lump lump for about 15 seconds and then calms down a bit. The revs also stick occasionally at around 2000 for a second and then slowly drop back.

I reset the computer about 600ks ago after the engine had been properly run in (about 8000ks) and it's done it ever since. Previously the car has been misbehaved after resetting but comes good after 100ks or so. It's also running quite rich and is up and down on power from day to day so I'm suspecting the ECU is to blame...

Any ideas ?
Map sensor ?

Sounds like how a tough ford inline 6 with a fair bit of work should be... I know guys with a lot less work than an ITS build and they get some funky idles...

Has it always behaved like this? Any ECU mods?

Get a vac gauge and monitor it.... see if vac changes as engine heats up...

Well that's the funny part, when I first had the engine installed the idle was fairly smooth (all things considered) and was only lumpy when I flicked on the A/C (because at that stage it was out of gas so I didn't use it and thus the ECU hadn't learned it) I don't mind the idle being lumpy, it sounds awesome  and it's what I'd expected from a stage 4 cam but it comes and goes which is a bit weird. Maybe the ECU is d**k around with the timing ??
If it was just a lumpy idle I wouldn't car but its the shaking/vibration through the car which is annoying when sitting at the lights or in traffic etc.

No ECU mods as such, I had a go at tricking the water temp sensor to make the ECU think it was running hot or cold but it made no difference in performance (on the road or the dyno)

Hey,

i had a similar problem with my EF when i started it up the idle would go to about 1000rpm then drop to 500rpm and would do this 4 around 30 seconds, but i also had misfires when accelerating, ended up only being my ingintion leads.

It shouldn't be the leads, the ones that are on it were new with the engine but I might look at getting some thicker ones.

Here's a few MP3s

This first one is shortly after I got the car, and how it was running prior to resetting the computer

This second one is how it is running now (sometimes)
The quality isn't as good as it's off my digital (still) camera but you can still make it out.

The only difference between those 2 clips is resetting the computer :?

Has fuel consumption changed much since you reset the ECU?

Not noticably - maybe 0.5-1.0 l/100ks, but it's hard to say as I usually give it a bit and I'm in and out of 1st and 2nd alot in traffic

Ya reckon ?
What are you basing that on ?
It'll idle "smoothly" a bit then like that for a 10 seconds, then smooth again, then hunt around etc. It's usually more consistent when it's cold...

It has a very strong exhaust smell which it developed shortly before I got my new engine. It's more noticable with the new engine, but I put that down to the cat being gutted (temporarily until I get a new one - it totally collapsed inside and was hardly breathing at all)

ive got a stage 2 cam in my six and it idles like crap and has a lumpyer note than those mp3 u sent ive checked for vacumm leaks... the isc motor is working but i think it doesnt know were to adjust idle to and its reading a f**k map reading due to the cam im pretty sure this can be fixed if u change the map sensor to a maf sensor... havnt really gone into it as time is a big factor but the more often i can get it to idle at lights without holding accel open to prevent it stalling and jus letting it try sort itself out its like its learning wats goin on and getting better but the standard computor only has adaptive values to a certain extent so my next step was a after market computor to try sort things out

loosing coolant and idles like crap. hmmmm....
Maybe you'd better go see mark before we all loose confidence in quality of his rebuilds...
not saying anything by this other that that it's not good publicity for him considering he seems to be a decent guy and plenty of ppl are reading this.
