could it be due to clearances opening up from a stretched chain? or something else? car has done 100,000km...

there should be a timing chain tensioner just around the front side of the engine somewhere. i have one on my eb. by memory you need an allen key to adjust it. could be as simple as adjusting the tension if its not too stretched. it could be a lifter noise as well which sounds rattly at times

The timing chain tensioner is self adjusting
could be a broken guide

ive had noisey lifters before and it is definatley a rattley sound and not that ticking/knocking sound a lifter makes. its only slight at idle but gets worse as the revs increase

is it possible that the chain has stretched outside of the tensioners ability to take up the slack, if thats what the problem is... what else would make noises from in there?

Chain stretch isnt a problem in the falcons, but the guides often snap. Best bet it to take the rocker cover off and have a look down there. You will be able to feel if the chain is slack or if guides are broken.
edit: When you look down the timing cover you might see something that looks like this. A bit of a guide snapped off and sitting somewhere dangerous. you can see where is snapped from here The other thing I can think it might be is rooted bearings on your idler pulleys. That could sound like what your describing.

it is pretty rare as far as i know for falcon timing chains to stretch so i agree it may be the guides.

i havent really taken notice to the location of the guides before, are they obvious? where abouts do i have to look for them? and are they expensive/hard to replace?

ive had the same problem since my motor was rebuilt. always thought it was my tensioner but replaced that and its still there. i bought the block of waggin and he said that the timing chain tensioner needs to be shimmed and i told mark from ITS Performance so im guessing he would have done it but then again i got a manual and diff conversion done by him and they both had prbolems galore with them.

genuine idle pulleys are around $50 for the pair. fairly easy to replace. not much harder than replacing the belt.
I believe there is aftermarket ones that are metal and some believe they are a better product? i cant comment on that as i have not experienced them

check this first;
Start your car and spray abit of water or belt grip on the serpentine belt and see if the noise goes away. Sometimes a worn belt can make all wierd noises on plastic pulleys(power steer, idler etc.) Metallic type knocking noises are common with a worn belt on a large plastic pulley.
