hi all,
my girlfriends BA XT 4.0L has developed a rattle sound and I'm sure its coming from inside the rocker cover right at the front of the engine it only happens once the car has been running for a while and only under about 1100rpm. the noise doesn't seem to get faster with engine revs like a tappet noise in fact it goes away when you bring the revs up but as soon as you get of the gas the noise is there again. there is no rattle on cold start up what so ever and doesn't start until engine is nice and warm. what the hell has gone wrong? the car has only travelled an easy 50,000km and been serviced every 5000km. anyone have any ideas whats gone wrong? thanks heaps.

Sounds like the timing chain. You could take the rocker cover off though and see if anything looks out of the ordinary though?

Possibly a chain guide or the chain tensioner?
Could also be a heat shield or even something along the serp belt or accessory? Stabs in the dark, but who knows. Long screw driver to your ear may help diagnose it. Location wise that is. a big hammer should fix it.

my first thoughts were a timing chain guide or tensioner but wouldn't it rattle when its cold as well, not just when its hot?
the rattle is definitely in the right place to be the timing chain but why would it only be doing it when the engine is hot?

Oil is thicker when cold...maybe it is dampening the rattle? Once hot the oil becomes thinner and runs off the chain faster/flings off easier causing less cushioning? Just taking a stab here.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but did you ever find the cause of this noise?
