the cat could be eaten out inside or the tin sheilding could just be ratling. with the car running push on the sheilding (NOT WITH BARE HANDS) and see if it helps.

Is this kind of thing a problem? My exhaust sounds rooted too, and Kmart told me it's rusted inside.

ive been told it happens if the cat is welded to teh exhaust and bolted tight as a Mot*er F*#ker. but not sure if its true!

welding of exhaust around area of cat, bottoming the cat out on something, and just old age wear the cat out. Most places will try and quieten it down by putting dents in the cat with a hammer to close the room it has to move. Easiest way but not the cheapest is to replace it with a new one. You can knock the guts out which is HIGHLY Illegal, but have seen it done. After market sports systems are quite easy to do, factory ones a little harder due to the bend in pipe. Other wise put up with it as it will eventually work its way out the back.

same with mine. Had an annoying rattle on start up and idle. Ended up that the cat and mufflers were starting rust out
