as some of you know i recently put a au engine into my ea..
well tonight i took it for a drive to woolongong and when i got there the idle stayed up around 1300 rpm for a few seconds (isc.). anyway i noticed that the engine is starting to rattle between 1100rpm and 1600rpm
considering the engine has only done about 77000kms im a bit conserned.

ive read a lot of threads on engine ticking but no one seems to have the noise between certain rpm..

the oil is only 1000kms old and it doesnt rattle or tick at idle and has excelent oil pressure
to me it sounds like the HLA'S but could it be the cam chain???

im thinking about changing the oil and see what happens ..
whats a good oil to use..????
i usually use penrite hpr ..but considering the engine suppose to have low kms i was thinking of using mobil 1 sinthetic or maybe a penrite sinthetic??

does the rattle sound like a broken rocker shaft without a miss to go with it

other then the rattle between 1100 and 1600rpm the engine runs great ..
it doesnt miss or anything to me it sounds like all the hla's are rattling all at the same time...

i changed my oil to penrite hpr 10 so far the rattle has gone away but i havnt driven the car far yet so i will see how it goes..

it had gulf western 15/40 oil in it has anyone used or heard of gulf western.
i only used that because thats what my mate got for me.. i sent him to get penrite and he had come back with gulf western..
but at the time it was late and it had to do...

yeh mate, gulf western have their factory out at Penrith. they also have their own top fuel team. ive only heard of good things from GW though

i never heard of them before today i just had a look at there web site and yea they are an australian company..

anyway i just took the car for a run and the rattle is 90% gone. possibly the other 10% is injector ticking...
but i will wait untill this oil has been in there for a while and see if it rattles again..
when i had the rocker cover off last week to paint it . the inside of the cover and rocker gear is spotless it looks like new in there..
so i would assume that the engine has been looked after..
and only having 77000kms on it it shouldnt really rattle at all considering the old 3.9 had more than tripple the amount or kms and it was as quiet as a mouse untill it got a bearing knock(the mouse found a hammer)lol
