Ok so im about to buy a AU i6 motor. This will most likely be a running motor with hopefully low k's .
the motor will then be put on a stand and worked on for 11 months as a school project. Once its on the stand, what exactly should i do to get the motor running like new with a bit more grunt? Im thinking : new pistons rings (possibly new forged pistons), new head gasket, new sports cam. what else can i do to make it go faster and last longer obviously my budget is low being a student so nothing too major. Im setting a budget of 2k all up. Expecting to pay no more then 500 for the motor, so 1500 in mods. |

Forget forged pistons, your not boosting it or going to run insane RPM (the factory ECU stops that)
re-ring it, bearings etc. Get 30thou shaved off the head (u will need premium fuel if your going to up the compression). Get the head ported, exhaust side primarily and fit bigger exhaust valves (cant remember of the AU had the earlier tickford spec valves hmm). JMM do most of their cam grinds to suit AU, but a cheaper alternative is replace the AU rocker setup with the Eseries item to open up more cam choice. That may end up more than $1500, usually just the machining and gaskets soak that up

forget the forged gear mate, forged pistons $700, forged rods $1300 and there goes ya 2k.

so you decided to go the rebuild as your school project....pretty boring decision if u ask me...sure your teacher would have seen that a million times....gunna be hard to get a really good mark...but i guess it doesnt matter much as your TER score isnt probably important - if your doing automotive your probably not going to uni...

It's true though... A rebuild like that is not difficult. All the machining is being done for you so all you're really doing is replacing the gaskets, ring and bearings and installing a cam. Man I did that when I was 13...

Hmmm i didn't know i wrote a secrete code in my original post asking about opinions on how hard it is.
Like i said im on a budget, and building a race motor just isn't possibe. and no im not going to uni? does that answer my original question? whats interesting to you? |
