my 95 ef falcon is starting to struggle a bit done ALOT of km's and doesnt have the power or the fuel economy it used to, a good friend suggested replacing the whole engine. a mechanic told me there is signs the head is going which is also encouraging me to either upgrade to a new car altogether or put a new engine in the falcon which ive put so much effort into previously, any recomendations? and if people believe the engine should be replaced what sort of $$$$ would i be looking at?
thanks |

You can get GOOD low km's 2nd hand engines from anywhere from $300-$600, an AU motor would be a good upgrade too, and I've seen them cheap often, to go into an EF you'd need to modify the sump on the AU motor though, but it's all achieveable. a Reconditioned EF motor will set you back around $1000, and would be another good way to go, but personally I'd throw another 2nd hand EF motor with low K's in it.

Gab If you can get reco EF engines for $1000, I'll take 10 of them. |

Lol, I'm not sure on exact prices man, I think last time I asked about a reco engine it was somewhere between $1000 and $1500, but that was a few years ago, and was for an XF engine, so things might've changed by now.

if your keeping the car do yourself a favour, get a low km AU engine and do the conversion, plenty of info on this site about how to go about it

Buy a second hand engine, chuck it in. Keep your old engine, recondition/fix it up/modify it while you still have a car. Then throw the newly refreshed engine into car and resell the second hand engine. You'll get experience and satisfaction...however with a lack of guarantee if you're not game enough to do it yourself or lack simple mechanical skills.

I reconditioned the engine in my EF and 80,000km on, it's still going great.
Bear in mind though that it's a lot of hassle and $ getting engine cranes, stands, machining work done, buying parts, etc. If I were doing it again, I'd just buy a later model car. If you reco the engine in your EF and then go to sell it in a few years, it's not going to be worth any more than it is now. If your engine is on the way out, then suspension components, gearbox, etc won't be far behind.
