Hey guys ,on thursday on the way home from work my 89 ea broke down, just driving along and it cut out and i could not restart it,no warning, stuck on the m4 motorway for 2 hours, once i towed it home i started doing checks,so far i have done/replaced:
- topped up and recharged my battery -Replaced my rotor button and dizzy cap -replaced my coil and coil lead -changed the suppressor and repaired earth going to block -Checked fuel flow and found to be okay The car is a 1989 Ea s pack cfi manual. I have done all of this and the car still does not run, no fuses blown,i can hear the fuel pump going and the fuel is pumping through and getting into the cfi throttle body, does anyone out their have any ideas out their of what it might be??,i cant put my finger on what it is,cheers...Vito

Have a look at the ignition wiring on the
steering column. Maybe stuffed ?? This was the problem with mine, and was similar symptoms to your EA. |

Im not sure it will be the tfi module, it went about 3 years ago but was a different problem, the car would backfire badly, run rough and then stall, this time the car just cut out and could not be restarted...Vito.

what you describe is exactly what happened when the dizzy tfi module died. usually caused by worn bearings on rotor shaft. recomended to replace whole distributor with reconditioned component.

Check ign relay behind drivers headlight, it's either the green or the brown one. Everyone overlooks this.

Was going to point out the relay...but locknut bet me to it .
If it's not the relay, then maybe check for wiring. There may be some corroded wiring, especially on the positive terminal. Sometimes wires can just come loose and nothing will run...happened to me once before. Another thing just to clarify, when you turn the key, the car cranks but does not fire? or does it just die after the petrol pump primes and the starter motor kicks in? phong =P~

The car cranks, but does not fire ,tries to but does not get going,i have checked for fuel supply issues but found to be all ok, fuel flowing when cranked,i checked from inlet fuel hose,i have checked the ignition relay (ecu relay) and the fusible links , and also found them to be ok,soooo, the only thing that i think it can be is the dizzy, i am going to replace it with a eb one i scored from my old work, with the new cap and rotor fitted, see how that goes, other vthan that im stumped, hopefully the computer hasn;t blown up.....Vito.

Ok,i fitted a dizzy i had lying around from a eb 4.0 lt,put the new cap and rotor i already had,car started straight away!! was cheering, but right now i think i need to play with the timing a bit because it runs a bit rough and down low its got nothing, after about 1500-1750 rpm the runs well,i'll play with it some more this long weekend, and work on my v8,busy busy busy!!...Vito
