Well the coil on the EL shat itself 2 days ago in the driveway(very lucky). Diagnosed the fault in about an hour. I first checked for spark-no spark, checked for signal from TFI module(yes). Then swapped over coil with an old EA coil i had spare in the shed, Started first go. Although I went out and bought a new bosch coil as this old spare one has 2 hairline cracks in it.

My question is where else can you mount them besides the current position where they can get wet from puddles etc and heat from engine. I know the saloon cars mount them somewhere else. Any idea's.

Also would it matter if a ran a longer coil lead. Say upto 8kohm resistance compared too the factory short lead which measures 4kohm resistance.

Cheers...........

Biggest drama is extending the wires. Get this sorted an you can pretty much mount it wherever takes your fancy.....I bought an aftermarket coil (cant remember the name), and car starts easier than before..

Cheers

I have just finished extending the loom but I am just wondering about the coil lead length and lead resistance.(longer the lead the higher the resistance)?

Should it make much difference?

When I changed to a Fireball ignition in my EL, I had it mounted to the strut tower.

This is the kit I stuck in my EL.

Didn't do much for power, but increased torque a bit, and improved economy. Mind you it was really bad before hand, and bad afterwards (big cam).

hmmmmm, I like the look of that.

Are there any other recommended aftermarket ignition coils?

That coil needs the ignition module too.

They make one that'll run from the regular ignition system, it's got a different model#. Can't remember it off the top of my head - it's been years.

Well I ended up mounting the ign coil in front of the airbox. Good spot to stay cool and dry!!

could just drill two holes in to the airbox and run bolts through that. just that you'd need an earth strap to bolt it to

The existing cables reach?
Or did you use an old spark lead to get a longer reach?

I thought of doing this ages ago too, but i was too lazy :)
Good on you!

I used a spark lead from spares I had in my shed (topgun 8mm lead from a 3.9lCPI engine). Factory lead is only about 20cm and the lead i am using is about 40cm. Car is accelerating alot better up hills and starting better since fitting the new coil.

Cheers..........
