the reason they are a prick to get off is that they just get done up over tight to make sure they seal.
as for unpluggin fuel pump, recommended. but if ya dont, just dont have ya face or a flame under the filter and youll be right

The pressure will still be there. Even after I uplugged the fuel pump the first bit of fuel to come out of the filter squirted out.

they can be a real b**ch. i agree with Gaz they are nearly always overtightened. having a steel flarenut going into an aluminium filter wasnt a bright idea either.
i've had it several times where i've had to remove the pipe going back to the tank completely and bust up the filter in a vice to get the nut free. even pipe spanners round off the aluminium. in respect to direction, if u look at the nut from the back it turns anti clockwise to undo.
