ok, the auto in my Ghia has packed it in and ive got a donor car with a good trans. My question is, are there any tips little tricks i need to know to remove the box without pulling the engine out. All of the work will be done on stands in my backyard.

stands are GOOD lol saves laying under there with not much room and dropping the box onto ur chest lol ends up quite hard work. I cant really help u tho as I cant remember where all the bolts are
couple of tips I can remember are get urself a long extension and a "wobbly" for the end of it, will definately help out on the high top bolts other than that im sorry matey |

LOTS of height
no tricks really. Remove the wires, oil lines, and shifter connections. Remove the tailshaft, take the inspection plate off and undo the convertor bolts, support the trans and undo the rear crossmember. Try to do the top bellhousing bolts first - it might help tilt the engine back by lowering the gearbox although I do what ^^^ he said and use 2x 12" extension bars with a uni joint just before the socket. pull the trans away from the engine and hope the car is high enough to drag it out.

sounds really stupid - but get a old skateboard to move the gearbox around - works a treat with the car high enough - use two jacks to raise & lower. A few extra hands helps too (& beer)

While this may or may not help but having a pit makes gearbox shenanigans a bit nicer!

yep easiest way is go to a place with a hoist and a transmission jack, its a bastard of a job in the backyard on bricks. with a hoist and proper equipment it is possible to drop a e series tranny in 12 minuts.

Thanks for the replys. Transplant was a complete success and i couldnt be happier shifts are smooth as and its good to have 4th gear back again So all is good considering i didnt know the condition of the box in the first place :S looks like ill be heading up to shep the nats after all

I didn't see this thread, was going to offer you the use of my trans jack that i made a few years back, basically it's a plate running 4 castors with 2 wind up jacks bolted to it, it has a pair of timing gears welded on running a chain and a socket welded to one of them, it has a plate on the top to support the trans.
Everyone that i've leant it to creamed themselves lol, said it was the best thing ever. |
