i am ready to take the engine out and have my massive crane ready. i have everything unplugged ready to go and the radiator out etc. now how do i go about lifting the engine on the right angle to clear everything? also do i need to change the lifting angle at all while the engine is on the crane? any other tips/advice would be great.

long chains with quite a few shackles on hand would help. yes you need to change the lift angle a couple of times. Moreso when its going back in than coming out though. Practice makes perfect.
tip: get 4x 1m long chains. better tip: get an engine lift load leveller!

Might find it easier with the front of the car raised a bit too. But one of the engine lift load levellers makes life really easy.

I use a single chain that is about 1.5 metres long going to the rear mount a chain type winch going to the front mount that way you can change the angle on the go.

I haven't removed an engine for about 10 years, but if I remember correctly it was a matter of having to adjust the angle quite a few times as we went.
Recently had someone remove the engine from the car I'm wrecking, and I know it can be all too easy to accidentally crack the windscreen on the way out, so just be careful! |

1 raise the front of the vehicle.
2 undo eng and trans mounts {if taking out together}. 3 lift trans to clear x member pulling engine forward 4 when x member is cleared raise engine a bit 5 lower the vehicle 6 I had the chain connected to the crane at the very front of engine 7 Raise the crane until radiator support is cleared .

Are you planning on bringing the engine out with the gbox still attached? Its a tight squeeze, and in most cases you'll do a bit of minor damage to the radiator support trying to make the squeeze.

or you could take the gearbox out first and lift the motor out without damaging the firewall and rad surport , thats how i would do it you want no damage . or look at the pik

just becareful of the lines that run along the firewall, dont do what idone with my ea and catch the brakeline with the rockercover bolt and bend it all outa shape i also put a dent in the firewall arggg.
i had the engine leaning heavily to the drivers side and the engine almost vertical, its a long and tireing process but keep your cool and you will be fine. |

Thats sounds familiar, amazing how far the brake lines stretch Also if you are dropping the motor during the lift take car it does not sit on the power steering rack lines as they bend also. Another point that got me was don't put a plastic bag over the gearbox extension housing and expect it to hold back the oil, I did and mine let go but fortunately most of it went down the exhaust pipe

wow that wouldve stunk like cats p!ss for a while..
jacking the car up over the body isn't an option with the falcons. the angle must be changed a few times. get one of those threaded angle changer thinga-ma-jigs, thats what i used, couldn't imagine life without one.

well how do you think they got there in the first place , its easy to undo 8 bolts on the xmember and 4 on gearbox xmember, and then lift body up , any engine hoist can do it - you just need to know how to do it . all i can say is if you dont really need to take the gearbox out leave it in - or take it out first ....

Get an engine balancer. I can take a pic of mine if you want. Fantastic for aligning engine to gearbox aswell.

well if i want to take the gearbox out seperately is it just a matter of undoing the nuts on the gearbox that connect it to the engine and it comes straight off? , or is there anything special i need to know so i dont wreck the clutch etc
