1. use 1/2" not 3/8"
2. use a single hex socket 3. big breaker bar 4. have a mans go, it'll come off

I dont have impact sockets, I cant afford snap-on or anything. is there a good quality, renowned brand, that doesnt break the bank? dont bother with pipes and extensions, get one of these teng 60cm breaker bars for around $45 http://www.tengtools.com.au/600mm-1-2-d ... r-bar.html whilte your at the tool shop grab a 14mm impact socket another $15 or so. go to a proper tool shop, not bunnings. makes it so easy to crack the bolts they just go 'click' and thats it! |

In regards to tools, I use Total Tools Industry tools. They are pretty good and haven't let me down. They also have life time warranty, so keep your receipt and you'll be fine. Some TTI stores actually get your details to keep you in the system just in case you pop back with a broken piece...so no need to really keep a receipt.
1/2" drive are the go if you want to work with a lot of car bits and pieces. If you have enough money a 3/8" is also good to have around, but you can buy them later I guess. 1/2" can set you back about $200-300 depending on which set and if it's on special.

I may be able to swing by if your local. or someone else may volunteer their time and quality tools. hey Dave remember how hard Kathy's head was to undo at Yobbo's, took SWC holding the socket on and my largeness hanging off it to get them! 1/2 inch drive minimum! I like kincrome but have others too but ant 1/2 inch will be better than 3/8 drive

If you want a real cheapie alternative to buying new decent brand tools might be worth having a look at cash converters - definately not all of them, but you'd be surprised at what they sometimes carry - I got a basic 1/2" drive sidchrome set for $20 which I was amazed with! it was missing one or two sockets which was why it was so cheap, I've since bought those ones individually...I've also seen some real cheap car accessories, like mags, guages etc real cheap - beware, though, there are probably more things that are a ripoff price wise than bargains, but they don't seem to have much of an idea when they put prices on stuff...never know, worth a look...

WD40?????????? what kind of idiots are you? Those bolts are soaked in oil ALL THE TIME. WD40 aint gonna do s**t.
Single hex socket an 100cm long breaker bar or an impact gun, but there is ALWAYS more power in a breaker bar. There has been 3 out of the countless heads i've done that needed more then a breaker bar. In that case I buy cheap 14mm sockets and weld them to the bolts, then use a breaker bar with a 1m bit of pipe over the the bar. (These three cases I broke some pretty good quality sockets with a 1m 1/2 drive breaker bar) |

Can you guys remember someone on here that used an angle grinder to cut off seized head bolts? I think he rounded them off first with cheap sockets.
Tickford_6, have you had any bolts shear off or strip thread in the block?

It might happen if the gasket leaks coolant on to one of the bolts. |

Nothing a two metre pipe extension can't undo.
a lot of leverage is the name of the came here. the further away you are from the bolt the easier it is to remove. providing there is plenty of flex with the breaker bar to soak and distribute the force away from the most rigid point.

Had the same problem. Took the rubber handle off my breaker bar and slid a long pipe (a closet rail actually) over the end. Gave me 1.5 metres of leverage Could move the moon with that leverage.

Oh, just to add to the `weld on an extension' idea, back in my tradie days at GMH we used to get the welder to weld the thickest washer we could find edgewise onto the bolt head (you may not have the room to do that, but you can weld bar stock and a washer or an extension on - part of the advantage is undoubtedly the leveragre that can then be applied, but a big part of it is the heat that travels down the bolt from welding, once you've welded it on there don't let it cool completely , give it a go while its still hot...

Good luck with 3/8 drive man.
I got a set of impact sockets 1/2in 10mm to 24 mm for $30, it was $30 to the deep drive aswell. So I got them to. SP tools are fairly cheap but very good. Repco arnt bad. |

Thanx for all the advice guys.
Bought a 14mm hex sidchrome socket to put on my t-bar, I used the same pipe as before, but because I had no extension, I could only reach the 4 corner bolts, and . . . .crack, crack, etc. So I'm going to take the rocker assembly out tommorow, it was planned anyway, might as well do it from the top down. I learnt two valuable lessons, Screw 3/8 drives, Screw extension bars, (cheap ones anyway), I tried another extension today, thought it was better quality, it was a 3/8 though, it also broke, so if it looks nice & shiny has no name, I'll assume its a cheap Chinese piece of scrap. |
