G'day, I need some info on removing the timing cover on my AU whist the engine is in the car, as I need to change the timing chain and gasket etc...
Ive looked in Gregory car manual which states that, once removing all the bolts, balancer etc.., it says that you have to unbolt the engine mounts and raise the engine slightly to allow clearance to unbolt the sump and lower it and then ill be able to remove the cover.

Is this correct? as ill have to hire a engine crane to lift the engine, which I don't want to do unless I have too.

Has anyone done it without unbolting and raising the engine from its mount?

There is always another way. In the " Good old days " and in the bush, people would throw a rope over a strong branch and lift a motor out with it. I have used a Kids swing set frame myself, an old strong one though. I would think about undoing the engine mounts, and jacking it up with a block of wood under the sump. Once it is well clear, some wood to hold up the engine mounts.

If you try this way, make sure that there are least 2 things to hold the Motor up. If the wood splits, it could take off your fingers when the engine come down.
