Do you oil the thread of the head bolts before putting them in and tightening? This can make a dramatic difference in the tightening torque required, this may be where IT'S PERFORMANCE comes up with those figures.

i use the blue thread sealer
doesn't dry hard but holds the bolts in

Lock tight...
You shouldn't need that. I just put a little bit of CRC on the bolt threads before I put them in. |

You also need oil on the base of the head bolt where it makes contact with the head.
Failure to put oil on there is a big reason why people feel they need to tighten bolts more than advised. I generally use normal engine oil because that will withstand a higher pressure whilst tightening due to a thicker viscosity. You could use an extremely thin layer of extreme pressure grease such as wheel bearing grease if you were fanatical but normal engine oil should do the trick. |

When I worked at a Dealership, we used Graphite grease.

Thats probably what I was thinking of... As long as you're not putting it into the head dry, it's all good

well i've decided to get the ACL EA gasket kit which is $74 and the bolts will be $42
i will use the hylomar gasket sealer and the blue gasket goo to go around the front of the head and the block. what would you all sugest to clean the top of the block with so instead of the gaskets alone costing $210 everything will cost $210 all good ya

well for those that may be interested the head gasket has been done
all went well except for three of the head bolts would not undo so we had to use the old angle grinder, cold chisel and hammer all back together and running
