My power steering pulley has started to make a rattling noise which i suspect the bearing is shot.
Update 20/6/06 I have fixed the problem!!!! It was a worn serpentine belt. Took it too a mechanic I know for a quote on a new pwr steering pump to be fitted. He came out to my car too listen to it and in 10 secs he said that noise is from a worn belt on a big plastic pulley. He sprayed some water on the belt and the rattling noise went away for 10sec at idle. Ye Hah i said to myself i have saved myself some $$$$$$. Anyway got home today after going to FORD SPARE PARTS and replaced the belt($53) plus the top idle pulley($27) on the tensioner arm (did the lower one couple wks ago). Started the old girl up and no more weird sounds. All i can hear now is the injectors pulsing. Cheers......................... Cheers.......... The pulley is only $35 and that's all i want too replace. I just want to remove the belt and then somehow get the pulley off and then wack the new one on.
Gregorys manual says you need a special tool, but i am sure someone on these forums must have worked out a method to get this pulley off... cheers.. |

ah ok, sorry i thought u wanted a whole new pump.
i haven't tried it, but i would think a standard 3 or 4 legged puller and a bit of care would do the trick.

The tool is shown in a photo in the gregory's manual and looks like a bolt with two different sized hex heads on either end and about 2inches long.

I don't see how replacing the pulley is going to fix a faulty bearing?

repco sell an aftermarket tool for around $100.
but as said how is replacing a pulley going to fix a buggered bearing? either rebuild the pump yourself, i don't think it needs the pulley to come off as you just dismantle from the rear. or get exchange, new.

From what i can see, there is a bearing pushed inside the pwr str pulley, much like the idle pulleys found on the tensioner arm. I just thought when you buy a replacement pulley it comes with a new bearing. cheers............... |

If there was a bearing inside the pulley then it would just spin and nothing in the pump would turn.
