Anyone have handy hints on how to replace a fuel pump in a EF Fairmont?

Its on LPG/Fuel and for some reason it wont start on Petrol as of this morning or wont switch over,, so i was told its probably the fuel pump!!!

unplug the earth from the battery terminal

when undoing the plastic screw thingy, it is easiest to do it with a home made tool, that way your chances of breaking the black cover is zero. If you are using a blunt screw driver and a mallet...it will take longer and can break the black cover.

Get a new O-ring before putting the black plastic cover back on. If you don't replace the O-ring, chances of a leakage is high and once you get a leakage the black plastic cover soaks the petrol, gets soft and is harder to remove with both the tool and the mallet/screwdriver.

Cover the petrol tank hole once you removed the whole petrol pump assembly. that way dirt don't get in.

If you want you can plug the in and out tubes with a dowel or something to stop dirt from going in.

the fuel pumps die when they dry up
i had the same problem in my duel fuel.
try to keep 1/4 tank of petty, otherwise you'll run through them.
mine dies about a month after being on gas.
before u get to the black plastic thingy, theres just a metal cover under the boot mat that comes out with like, 6-8 screws.
then just the fuel send and return lines pritty easy, send line has a safety clip thing that you need to press against to pull the fuel line out. easiest to do with a spanner.
then try undo the metal hose clamp around the black plastic thing. should make it easier. mine wouldnt undo so we had to persuade it...

See i always have quater petrol so not sure whats gong on. Is there a way of testing for 100% that its the pump? where's the relay for it so i can check that first perhaps?

I have had 3 die over the years on my wagons so I would be looking at that first but see if there is fuel flowing when the pump runs

Where is the relay for the fuel pump located? i wouldnt mind checking that before i get another pump

The relay for the fuel pump should be under the coolant tank.If I remember correctly it is the green relay.Some EF's I have worked on, the relay is the closest one to the inner wheel arch and hard to get at.If this is the case,I undo the 3 coolant tank mounting bolts,leave all the hoses connected and GENTLY slide and twist the tank towards the power steering pump.You should then be able to get at the relay.If the green relay is the first one in the row - easy.

you should just be able to check for current at the fuel pump plug with a multimeter.
i assume its not even priming?
