I have just found out that my head gasket is leaking externally (very slight leak). Normally I would do this job myself as I have done 3 times in the EA I had earlier, however I just don't have the time.
So a Mechanic I know is going to do it on friday for around $600 if the head tests up ok. My concern is a week later I am driving over to WA, and he tells me that I don't need to have the head re-tensioned, should I be concerned? Last time I didn't re-tension a head the gasket failed inside 6 months.

How bad is it leaking is there any change in preformance water in oil or anything like that? My headgasket has been leaking slightly for the last 2 years and the car is going strong as ever. Try using Chemi-weld or equivilant products first and see what happens.

The I6's use a head bolt that is designed to stretch to the right tension.
Every time ou do a head gasket, the bolts should be replaced for this reason. Basically, you tension the bolt to the specified setting, then turn it (not sure myself) some amount of turns more. Over the life of the bolt, it will stretch into the correct tension. This way, Ford don't have to retension the bolts at the cars first service. Also means you cant use the old head bolts again, as you will be putting back in old stretched bolts that will generally cause problems again. Ford did this on the first head gasket they did on my car, and within 500km it was leaking again

It is only a slight leak, loosing about 500mls every fortnight. The leak is external, that is not into a cylinder and not into the oil. I'd put it off and use something like Chemi-weld if I was staying around home howerver I don't want to risk getting stuck on the nullabor with a head gasket that may get suddenly worse.

Thanks for that arm79 the mechanic say he always uses new bolts, never retorques a ford head and has never had one come back.
Your explanation makes me feels a lot more comfortable!

i used wynns radiator stop leak in mine because you can run it with your coolant. mine use to loose a little now and then. at the moment i have'n topped mine up for about a month and i live in central qld where the weather is always hot! I once quoted an exchange head for mine and it was $650 add a head gasket, bolts and labor and its almost $1000 an exchange ef engine is only $990 so im not realy worried. But as i say ive been driving round with a leaky head gasket for the last 2 years using chemi weld every now and then. just make sure your cooling system is clean and always topped up.

I would advise against chemi weld.....
as it was explaind to me by other members that the chemi weld does not know hte difference between the hole in the head and holes in the rad! IT can not saying it will block the rad up!

Chemi weld lasts a few weeks, but yes, it will end up clogging up the radiator which is not good at all.
