hey, i recently had my car at the mechanics for a couple of things, and when i picked it up he said that i needed a new heater tap cause it was corroded but will last a bit longer, and that its a big job that involves removing the head, which i thought was a bit much... so a couple of days later i looked under the car, and sure enough the heater tap is corroded, its the bit between the hose that comes from the thermostat and then goes into the firewall, and has a vacuum tube on it yeah? but it looks like all i need to do is drain the coolant, undo the clips, chuck the new one on and off i go...is it that simple?

yes it is that simple. you dont even have to drain the coolant if you dont want to. just make sure its not hot and you bleed the system properly after you replace it.

yeah i thought taking the head off was a bit far...anyways i just got the tap, so i dont have to drain the coolant out? i thought as soon as i undo the connections coolant would all drain out, or does coolant only go through that pipe when the engines on? and also how do you bleed the coolant system? i had a look in the gregorys but couldn't find anything, thanks

i took out my heater tap and just put a new pipe in to run it with out the tap and it all works the same air hot and cold just pluged the vacuum tube it all works the same as before dont see the need for the tap heater works on cold and hot

the tap is to regulate the heat,,with out it you only get hot or cold no warm..

Hi, it is advisable to get the origainal metal body tap & not the Mexican version some Ford Dealers (Fraud dealers) have been pushing. Mine was replaced 3 times by the dealer. Eventually they replaced their new plastic version with the original metal ones. They said that it must have been a bad batch of plastic ones. At least I only had to pay once, for the original replacement, but it cost a lot of time & coolant.

i am trying to fix mine but the hose keeps leaking, replaced tap but i cant get it to stop leaking around the other end of the pipe that connects to it. now clamp won't tighten or loosen...

Agreed with this point. Better to have heat resistant plastic. BTW, if you're going to replace the tap and have extra cash to throw, change the hoses as well if they haven't been done before. Saves you from doing it all again later if the hoses bursts. Not too sure how to do a tap change without draining coolant. phong =P~

hello i am new to owning a ford i have a el fairmont i have owned it for 6 hours now
when i turn on the heater there is no heat coming from the vents could this be the heater tap ??

I wouldn't think it's the heater tap because failure of a heater tap would leave the tap open and thus the heater should be working. This heat problem could be your Blend Door Motor (BDM) which controls the amount of heat/cold mixture. If the motor is stuffed then you will only get cold air coming through if that was the last setting. Though you might want to put the climate control into a self test mode to pin point the exact problem. Someone here might help you with the self diagnostics...it's early and I can't remember from the top of my head the procedure. phong =P~

I would say he was talking about replacing the intire system. I was at the wreckers to get the pipe that goes from the thermostat housing to the water pump and joins to the tap some where in the middle. Lucky this car had no gear box in it so it was only a pain in the a*** to get out but if the box was in I would say the head would have to come off. |

Thanks Pongus for your response
I replaced the heater tap anyway this morning and a couple of other things to bring her up to RWC, still no heat then I went to "ToranaGuy" a member here on ford mods he lives around the corner from me he helped me using the diagnostics mode it came up ok and no problems and then the heater worked no errors and no pulling apart of the dash
