Doing it that way I can't see it being possible to maintain the cam timing. And you wont know once you've done it if the timing is right.
Do it the right way its not that hard, then you will be sure the timing marks line up.

Do it the right way its not that hard, then you will be sure the timing marks line up. why not, you feed the cam cog on the drivers side (feed it the new chain that is), while turning the harmonic balancer while pulls the new chain from the cam cog, so long as you keeep it fairly tight so it does jump a tooth while your turning it, shouuldn't be abn issue. |

Well its up too you of course. I certainly wouldn't be brave enough to try it.

Your thinking of belts. Most timing belts need changing every 80k-100k or 5 years. I'm looking forward to doing my wifes lancer in a couple of weeks...Not!

scott sorry mate i think your starting to get to the point where if you want this done you should take it to a mechanic, the correct way to put the chain on is by taking the timing case off, to do that you have to pull the harmonic balancer off. you will need a pulley remover then.
the last thing you wanna do is f**k the timing up, you must not have something quite right because there should be good tension on the chain they arent rubber they stretch. you may have even done what i did and bent the bolt in the sprocket that drives the oil pump |

And the chains do stretch after time, not quickly like a rubber belt, but they will stretch. I douubt I bent the sproket as I didn't lift my chain up with an engine hoist!!! And f**k mechanics they s**t me. Nah from tomorrow I'm working the next 9 days in a row andd after that the car has to be ready to be taken over to the mainland, so it might end up going to a mechanic - trying to decide who, City Auto, Dougin and Parker, Denis Wright or Dilgers are about the only ones I'd trust. |
