Hmmm, good idea Troyman.

I will try that first this afternoon.

If the idle is hunting around like a b**ch and its running way to rich, troyman would know better, but i reckon its the aux shaft. Check your timing with the engine in diagnostic mode, with a timing light. If it still moves around like the ecu is controlling it (even though it isn't) there is you problem.

That would make sense if it also did it while on LPG, but it doesn't. Aux shaft would show consistent issues on both fuels.

True that. take into account though when on petrol it is using the signal from the distributor to determin crank position so it knows when to fire the injectors and so on. When on lpg its vacuum that controls fuel flow so it wouldn't manifest itself as bad it would just be a ignition timing issue which a slight advance and retard would not make things as noticeable.

Have you wired in the facility to provide fault codes with the later ECU's (EBII and onwards)??
I have given you advice on how to do this in the past (12v light and a toggle switch) - should take you about 1-1.5 hrs to do.
Also gives you the ability to put the ECU into base timing.

With the various engine changes, I can't see how you could fine tune timing any other way.
Plus the fault codes may show you some obvious issues - O2 sensor/TPS, etc out of range.
Use the diagnostics you have at your disposal.

you can still put the el ecu in self test mode and retreve fault codes with a led by using the eb1 plug in the engine bay..
it should still work...

Well, I unplugged the TPS switch altogether last night, and it made no difference at all. Seems this could be the issue.

I also tried swapping the plugs around in different combinations, also with no difference.

I will hit the wreckers for some spare EA type stacked TPS switches, and will look at making an adapter piece so I could use the later EB11 type throttle body and TPS.

Otherwise, Troyman will be getting a visit from BenJ on the weekend for a spot of diagnosis/troubleshooting :D

Hi all.

Bit of an update.

I plugged in the EB ECU today, and it still had the same idle issue and lack of response in midrange.

So seeing as unplugging the TPS made no difference, I have acquired two EB1 type throttle bodies with attached TPS. I will swap one in over the next day or so and report back the results.

Cheers
BenJ

ben
after our convisation today i got to thinking so i went home and disconected my tps to see what happened and the engine idle rised to about 1800rpm.
but was still smooth..
but i have had a tps with a higher than recomended voltage at idle and it did what yours is doing..(ecu putting in fuel as it thinks the throttle is open more than it is)..
so hopefully this is all it is..

check the map sensor wiring and plug...the sensor could be good but the ecu might not be seeing the right signal...

I had mine come loose and it ran like crap on petrol...but on lpg it was almost normal, only symptoms were idle jumped to 1500 and the shifts were a little harder, car was almost normal apart from this!!!

retreive the trouble codes, it will tell u alot...

Hey Guys - Problem Fixed

A couple of you suggested Vac Hoses/Leaks, and there were some suggestions it was map sensor related, and well, you are all correct.

Image

That is the manifold end of the Map Sensor Vac Hose. Replaced it with a piece I had laying around, 'Hey Presto' all is good.

I couldn't see anything wrong, until I jacked the front up this moring and wriggled underneath, quite a feat if you know me, and had a good look around making sure everything was where it was supposed to be, and then found that.

The Wagon now drives beautifully on Petrol, and now Idles Smoothly on LPG, so I am very happy.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

Cheers
BenJ

Glad you found it! Map sensors are very important for the I6.
