My EA runs really rich. at idle u can smell the fuel in the car.
it tries to idle at 600rpm but cant drops to 400ish then ECU tries to correct and shoots it up to abort 900rpm, while the motor shakes a fair bit. It have to hold it at 1100rpm for it to run smooth. Besides taking it to someone to get a tune what can i do about it ? |

its usualy the map sensor that is f**k with the ea's all you got to do is make sure all the vacume hoses are good and theres no holes or splits in them if they all seem 100% you would need a new map sensor they shouldnt be to expensive

Is your car a CFI motor? If so I just went thru the same process. Trying to get fuel consumption down fron 20 plus litres per 100KMs. Replaced MAP and every other sensor I could find and in the end it turned out to be worn injectors. Now using around 13L/100KMs.

its a 4.0ltr MPFI.
how many vac lines go into the MAP sensor? looks like just the one, goes into the back of the MPFI manifold. |

Yes just one hose. Three wire plug. Make sure hose is not damaged or leaking either end. If all looks ok remove hose from MAP sensor and see if makes any difference. If no diff, check to make sure there is vac at hose end. If vac ok highly suspect MAP sensor. If no vac at hose end check back to manifold. Could be blocked hose.

Have a look at the christmas tree at the lower rear of the intake manifold it should have i think 3 different vaccum hoses on it,this plastic tree might be cracked or broken creating a vaccum leak.If that is fine i might suggest that you engine computer might have a problem. The computer might have a earth burnt out.I have replaced a couple of computer with very similar symptoms ranging from models EB to EL.Hope that helps

I took the Vac hose off the MAP sensor, with the car at idle, ran like s**t,
Smell of petrol under hood and from exhaust was worse than with it on. so this means that the map sensor is functioning properly but there could still be a small vac leak somewhere else ? didn't check the christmas tree thingo (can see what u are talking about) pain in the a*** to get too as well. Where do those VAC lines go ? |

Have you checked your Oxyegen sensor. They f**k out on falcons. The sensor sends signals back to the computer.
Signal: Rich - lean - rich - lean and so on. Prob into the circuit that sends signal back to computer. It should flucuate between zero volts and 1 volt constantly. zero volts equal lean 1 volt equals rich. I can't remember the exact numbers but it usually operates between 0.2 and 0.7 volts. Check that it's doing that. If not, i'd replace the oxygen sensor. Make sure you don't touch the part of the sensor that sits in the manifold cos any oil from your hands can f**k out the sensor real quick.

Check the earth lead on the side of the engine block just in front of the distributor,if this lead is loose or the wiring is shorted can cause your symptom its the earth for the oxygen sensor (i'm not too sure if it is,but im sure that its an important earth for the functioning of the engine)hope you can understand my bellowing on.Hope it helps.

I disconnected the O2 sensor and it seemed to run a bit better, still s**t house idle, no way near as bad as without the MAP vac lines in. but didn't smell as much petrol being used.
less s**t coming out of the exhaust with it disconnected aswell. my problem seems to be like this thread http://fordmods.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=47378 ausdealer in that thread says might be injectors - but wouldn't i get less fuel going in if injectors are stuffed, not running really rich ? |

check the air bypass valve on the TB.....it controls idle speed

On the CFI the injectors wear out. That is the hole(s) in the nozzles get bigger with age. I made the mistake of putting a good dose of cleaner in when I swapped my original set for a set off a car I am wrecking which had done even more KMs than my own car.
I had LPG installed and the guy at Carb and Gas in Brissie put me on the track as when it was running on Gas it was as good as! |

Where abouts is this Line? there was a hose at the front of the throttle body on the engine side that disappeared behind the MPFI manifold. disconnected it no change, checked to see if there was a vacuum at the hose and the connector there was nothing. put it back on this time with a hose clamp as well as there was not one on it.. |
