Hey guys i was driving home the other night when my car just stopped, the stereo and lights all worked, but the engine just wouldnt go, so i had someone come out and look at it real quick who said there was no spark so it was either the coil or the distributor.
I picked up a second hand coil from the wreckers for $15 and if that doesnt work they are just gonna take that price of the price of the distributor. Im driving an '94 ED and that coil looks like its in a pretty rude spot. Do i have to take the manifold off to get to it? And if i do, how hard is it to to do? I guess maybe what i could do is just get the leads off the old one and plug them into the new one without putting it in the car? That'd save me removing it unless necessary i guess? But then if it isnt the coil i will have a burl at the distributor which will require me to remove the manifold anyway, so what should i be doing and looking out for! I have to try and have it ready by monday morning before im back at work or else im gonna be hiking hardhat on head and toolbox in hand all the way to Nunawading... f**k THAT! Cheers guys!

rotor button in the dizzy could be gone. Try a new dizzy cap.

Yeah but to get to the dizzy and coil with minimal fuss and f**k around is the main issue here. How much is a dizzy cap? Im guessing fairly cheapo!
So how the f**k do you go about changing the cap and coil? My manly hands are too big to fit anywhere remotely close to them.

Easiest way to change the cap & rotor is to remove the Air filter box and theIdlespeed solenoid from top of throttle body.
You can get to the coil from underneath, no need to remove the manifold.

Ok cool, i can sort of reach the distributor, but what about the coil which is the part i actually need to replace right now.

umm no if that dizzy is dead you have to replace it. the rotor button is engine driven. if the rotor dosent spin the car wont go.

I meant that simply as a test to see if that was the problem before removing it from the car.
How do i get to the coil anyone?

is the 30amp engine fuse blown? (not sure if ED's have one)
if its blown, the stereo will still work but has no fuel pump or ecu power

Test the coil from the distributor end of the coil lead, put a sparkplug in it then see how much of a spark you get from there.

if its blown, the stereo will still work but has no fuel pump or ecu power check your fusible links first as Krytox said. process of eliminating one from the other, hopefully pin-pointing the problem.

Put the car up on stands and u can get to it from underneath, by reaching up under the manifold. Still a prick to get to, espesially if you havnt got small hands, but thats how i done mine...[and the starter motor to...twice!]

thanks guys, yeah the first thing i did was check the fuses as that has happened to me before, then i checked for a spark and didnt get one.
I just plugged the lead and wire into the coil but left it unattached cos it was a bastard to get to, the car has started.. i repeat the car has started. That was the easy part, now ive gotta try get the old one off and bolt the new one on haha. Thanks for the help guys, much appreciated. One last question though, what causes a coil to go like that? is it simply time, wear and tear?
