rocker gear comes straight off, just lever it up both sides till it comes off so im at the stage where i should put a rag over a screw driver and start levering? |

so TDC is not 12oclock it's 3 o'clock? or is that mark not indicating TDC? |

depending what stroke its on, TDC will be at 3.00 for cyl one. you will find it easy to find cause cyl 1 intake and exh will both be off rock. but i would not go moving anything now, you will find the rocker rear is hanging on the dowels as suggested. i would be careful lifting the rockergear with a screw driver.
Maybe see if data_mine is close by to give instruction, he was present and active when a RPD cam went into his old 6. if he remembers what was done. but at the same time, his gear did not hang on the dowels so he may not be of help.

The mark on the sprocket should be facing towards the intake side of the engine...with the mark sitting like a minus, level with the head surface.
After seeing those photos, I remember how I remove the rocker gear the first time. I used a medium sized flat head screwdriver, set it between the camshaft rough area and levered upwards. The screw driver never touched the head surface anywhere...Once you get it off a tad, you can use a blunt flat head and use the end of the head bolts ("them" bolts) as a levering point (not the head surface). First time usually takes a bit of patience. BTW...did you set the cam chain tensioner to locked position? phong =P~

Hrrmm that dot seems to be confusing me a little... my motor is off and the white dot is at 11oclock... what do I do? Does that white dot resemble the same dot on the V timing gear?
Well (apart from the above) it looks like I'm ready to start prying... except for this chain tensioner bit? I'm reading through that other thread now but again confusing as all f***... might leave the gear for now... Cheers everyone! |

you should have put the engine on tdc and release the chain tensioner before you start taking the rocker gear off..
as your fitting the verniea gear you need it to be on tdc so you can put the gear in the right position otherwise you will end up with more problems than you can deal with... |

if you cant put it on tdc because you already removed your rocker gear??
fit the new cam re-fit the std cam gear(dont cut the zip ties untill you have fited the new cam) then get the engine to tdc then remove the cam gear and fit the verniea gear... |

firstly, you can remove the rocker gear right now without worrying about anything else.
Secondly as mentioned, theres a self tensioner on the chain, which is accessed behind the power steering pump. click on the link in my other post about specifics. Basically you have to release the tension on the chain to change the cam gear over, then when its all fitted then you release the tensioner so it springs back into place |

Ok all is done except getting the original timing gear (sprocket) back on. I didnt release the tension, just took the lifting gear and cam out and replaced the cam. Before I did that I lined up the engine and timing gear (tdc/3oclock).
I want to replace the timing gear with the vernier stuff but at this point it would seem easier just to fit the original stuff but i cant get the sprocket back on the thing cause the tension is too tight, so obvisously i will have to loosen the chain but if i'm doing that I might as well put the new sprocket on right? so all the info i need form here is in that other thread? Q. Does anyone know the torque settings for the bolts? The sprocket/timing bolt should be set to 80nm as directed by the V gear installation sheet but need to know what the lifter bolts need to be torqued to? |

yep, remove the power steering pump and its bracket and move them out of the way, then you can follow the other thread on how you lock up & release the tensioner.
With mine if found, the vernier gear will go on one row of teeth at a time insteasd of trying to slot both rows of teeth onto the chain in one movement, but you will work it out |

Cam gear bolt is 50nm torque, and should use medium strength threadlocker on the thread. Rocker gear bolts are 20nm torque, as theyve been known to snap at the factory spec 25nm |

if you're going to set the timing, you might as well remove the whole Timing Chain Tensioner assembly and give it a good clean. If you're in a hurry to get this done, then don't worry about pulling the whole tensioner out. Jam flat blade screw drive on the tensioner housing (the big bit with the 2 holes indented on either side of it's top) and head so that it doesn't move while you undo the tensioner plug (the hex bolt thing sticking out).
If you have time to finish this, go to bunnings or auto shop and get yourself a packet of o-rings that has a variety of sizes. Remove the whole tensioner unit, give everything a good clean and replace all O-rings. Can't remember how many O-rings there are....make sure you don't destroy the filter while you are removing everything though. phong =P~
