yep as per PM.... you have to remove the large retainer/housing/round dark grey coloured thing

Quote:
You have to unscrew anticlockwise the large outside bit to remove the tensioner assembly. The hard bit is it only has two dowel holes to grip onto, kinda like a fitting for an angle grinder

If you cant use vice grips to turn it, then make a tool, or get someone to make a tool. Could also try hammering against one of the holes to turn it

so to do that I would have to take the Vgear back off? remove and replace (with the original) tensioner assembly, put the gear back on and then tighten the chain?

if you have loosened the chain (locked up the tensioner) then the vernier gear will be able to be fitted on the chain and pulled up onto the cam and bolted on. Then you can release the tensioner (anticlockwise) and the chain should go tight.

If you cant do that then the tensioner hasnt been locked up properly or jammed up, but dont worry as you just undo the retainer like we mentioned and the tensioner can be removed then from the side of the block, lock it up in your hands, refitted to the engine, then screw the retainer back in, then use the allen key to turn the tensioner anticlockwise to release it.

I f**k hope you not pulling my chain lol

Ok which part is the retainer? It's confusing cause i've only just learnt what the lifter Retainers are...

So what exactly do I do to release the tensioner and tighten the chain:

a. turn the 3mm allen key anticlockwise
b. turn the rubber hosing anticlockwise
c. turn the rubber hosing clockwise
d. turn the 3mm allen key clockwise
e. turn the 3mm allen key sticking out 5mm from the hosing, as well as the hosing anticlockwise
f. turn the 3mm allen key sticking out 5mm from the hosing, as well as the hosing clockwise

Just to clear this up once and for all.

Also, does this sound right as to what I have to do right now:

1. Remove the Vgear and screw holding it in place
2. Locate the tensioner assembly inside the engine
3. Turn the tensioner assembly untill it comes free
4. Put the tensioner assembly completely back together and refit inside the engine under the cog/Vgear
5. Refit the Vgear and screw in
6. Release the tensioner by doing a,b,c,d,e,f which will tighten the chain
7. Replace power steering pump and the rest
8. Put lifter gear back on
9. Replace rocker cover
10. Go for a lap :)

That pretty much everything?

Thanks for the continued support FordFairmont!! Owe ya :)

already explained...... the bolt you removed to stick the allen key in, came out of the "retainer"

stick the allen key with the tubing over it, and lightly push on the tube and turn the allen key anti-f**k-clockwise  .... only gotta turn it a bit and you will hear it spring out.

After 4 pages we are still at square one. Someone might be able to explain better than me hopefully...

it depends where the bolt is..??
did it snap at the top of the bolt or near the thread??
if it snaped at the top of the bolt, if you remove the rocker assembly you should be able to undo it fairly easy??

Remove all the rocker gear, weld a nut onto the end, then remove broken bolt. Once that is done, clean all threads with a thread chaser, then apply engine oil to threads of bolts and retighten to reccomended specs.
Cheers
Brett

Hahaha Jared, my exact thoughts. I'm sure we have all asked heaps of questions during our modifications/fixing dilemma.

yeah they have been known to snap, im worried about mine since ive had the rocker gear on/off a dozen times

Rocker gear will have to come off but thats easy, i'd just pay some smart kent to get the bolt out if its snapped level with the head and find another at the wreckers or even just a similar one from a bolt place (?)

Nearly there dude, but dont put everything back together until its done properly !!!
