See what I was doing, lesson here for all newbies, was setting the torque to Pounds not nm (because that's what my wrench reads in). So when tightening to 20 pounds, I was really tightening to 26.??nm. Newbs always check to see which units you are measuring in. I'm surprised more of the bolts didnt snap, I bet some were friggin close though. While unscrewing them you could feel that they had been done up too tight and consiquently I dont feel safe replacing just 1 bolt.

My mechanic is coming around tomorrow around lunch time to drill the bit out. HOPEFULLY I will be cruising around soon after.

I'll keep you's updated on the progress and my CMS review will be coming up soon after that.

Once again, thanks so much to everyone that posted a reply. Every bit helped.

If your careful you can just drill the centre of the bolt out, id say with a 4.5 drill bit.
Please centre punch it first.
Go to supercheap and buy some ezyouts or they call them bolt removers they come in a packet with about 5 or six different sizes for about $10.
Then carefully screw it in and because there left hand thread (opposite to normal so anti clockwise to tighten) as the ezyout screws down into the bolt it will lock in and screw out the snapped bolt.

This is what your mechanic will do, but id do it myself, it will give you experience and there a good little tool to have in your toolbox.

On the topic of snapped bolts. Just so all of you Melb guys know, there is a Mobile guy called The Thread Doctor.
He will come to your house and remove broken bolts.

I acctually used him last week. he came here within the hour and removed it for me. (Broken roller rocker bolt on 5ltr). Gotta love a mobile service that comes and fixes your fk ups! :D heh

The Thread Doctor
Damian is his name.

Stevo- for all the Melbourne peeps, thanks

FLASH- you're a champ!, had no idea they had kits around. it sounds simple enough but im sure experience would play a big part in it being down correctly- the mechanic is coming round tomorrow @ 10 to fix it up but I might duck off and grab one before he gets here and get him to give me a 'hands on' rundown of what to do for next () time.

thought that was it for the head when that bolt snapped

Ok now that it's been 2 days the bolt is out and am finally almost ready to hear her sweet sweet lullaby.. but, there's always a but :?, which way does the lifting gear goes on??

The only distingusting marks are the rounded edges of one end and on one face (the same face on each) on the actual lifter arms there is a D in a circle. Does the D represent the front or the back?

After I sort that out and get some bolts I'll be back to the torquing stage. And so this doesnt happen again or to anyone else, let get some torque settings down:

Lifting Gear Bolts (bolts in sets of 4): 20nm | Factory 25nm. Mine snapped @ 26.??nm

Front Vernier Gear Sprocket Bolt: Vernier Spec 80nm | Factory 50(?)nm. Anyone had one of these snap? If so, at what torque?

Top Rocker Cover Bolts: ??nm

Left Power Steering Bolts: ??nm
Front Power Steering Bolts: ??nm

Almost there guys :D

Anyone have any idea?

EDIT: ok if someone can get some answers for the torque settings (i dont have a manual) and the way the lifting gear goes i will donate $50 to FordMods, split evenly throughout the different states meets.

the rocker gear can only go 1 way you'll know when u go to put it on for the torques:

Top Rocker Cover Bolts: 4 - 7nm

power steering all 20 - 28nm
power steering bracket to timing case cover 5 - 7.5nm

Ok here's how the lifting gear goes:

At the front the 2 bolts are closer together whereas at the back they are in line with each other...

Cheers mate.

One last question, and if the answer isnt the one I'm looking for I'm gonna be f***ing pi**ed:

Did the Gear have to be @ 3oclock and the harmonic balancer lined up when I sat the cam in the engine? or does the cam have to be aligned with the engine before everything is put back together?

as far as im concerned the cam gear can be in any position when you remove and refit a camshaft, as long as the cam gear doesnt slip a tooth on the chain and you align the dowel pin on the cam gear with the slot on the new cam when you re-install it will be fine.

BTW the "crooked" rocker arms always go on the intake (passenger) side when you bolt them down

Thanks bro. The lifting gear has to come back off again and I have align the balancer and engine, then it should all be smooth sailing...

If anything goes wrong this time like I snap another bolt im gonna be so unbeliveablly p****d and will have no choice left but to go get Focked UP.

yeah i just fitted a new cam today and was dreading playing with the tensioner, as the last few cam swaps ive tied rope to the cam gear to keep the tension on it, but had sprung out this time.

So i reset the tensioner and started the car and heard nothing but chain slap  .... then after a few minutes it was ok, i assume the oil pressure fixed things
