EDIT: Ok the info is a bit all over the place but with this thread I managed to go from having a cam sitting in my lap with NO IDEA whatsoever, to knowing how to do it and throughly knowing it. if you have no clue this will take a good day to do but can be done! save yourself the $200+ a mech would charge and learn whats goin on....................... enjoy!
----- My CMS cam arrived today and I'm putting it in. I've removed the rocker cover, timing sprocket bolts and have removed all but 2 of the rocker gear bolts. It's the 2 bolts in the middle, they are un-done but wont slide out like the other 20... whats wrong? Do I rip them out or is there something I havnt done? [To get the bolts out just pull them out as far as they will go and unscrew. They will unscrew out. Remember to undo each bolt evenly.] I got Vernier gear with the cam but unless someone gives me a bit of advice on installing that I'll have to leave it for another day. [If you remove the sprocket/orginal gear from it's place at the front of the cam and the cog/sprocket/gear drops down you will HAVE TO reset the tensioner which mean you will need to loosen and retighten the timing chain so you may as well replace the original gear with the Vernier Gear] At present I've got zipties around the current timing sprocket and chain. Am I going to have to remove those to get the rocker gear out? [Nope.] How do I know where TDC is on the chain? The current sprocket has a white dot on it? Is that TDC? [To correctly align the engine, turn the crank bolt around until the 'white dot' is perfectly parrell with the head. There is also an alignment marker in the harmonic balancer and engine, so make sure the white dot is at 3oclock and the harmonic balancer and engine mark line up] After I get past this hurdle I'm sure there will be more... but if I can just get past this bit I'll be making progress. Thanks guys! Last edited by InspectorRectum on Fri Nov 14, 2008 9:27 pm, edited 8 times in total. |

Rocker pedestals (the pieces that attach to the head) on either side of the block and I think the centre ones, have guides which the pedestals slide over.
You will have to lever it up using maybe a long flat head screw driver and wrap some cloth on the tip. Use the cam as a pivot point (the rough patches of the cam) and the inside of the head (making sure you have cloth or something soft for the tip of the screw driver to prevent damage to head) as the anchor point. Don't use too much force... Make sure you lever the rocker assembly evenly, cause the guides hold the rocker assembly together, so if it's higher on one end, it'll be harder to remove. phong =P~

Thanks for the help mate, but could you explain a little more as to what the 'pedestals' are?
The gear is on there pretty bloody tight! There are bolts that screw down into the head on the sides of the gear? Wrong part? |

i typed out a long lengthy post on what to do but deleted it as theres too much specifics to mention so you dont bugger it up, so i will recommend you ask someone nearby to come give you a hand.
the rocker gear will pull straight off, as it has some flex & its on dowels which is why the bolts might be on an angle and hard to pull out stuff some rags in the oil galleries in the head and tape up each rocker arm/lifter so s**t doesnt fall out everywhere when you pull off the rocker gear. Leave the bolts in the ends of the rocker gear as they hold the pedestals together You will have to reset the tensioner since youve removed the cam gear, and you might as well fit the vernier gear as that goes straight on with the tension off the chain. To get to the tensioner you have to unbolt the power steering pump and its bracket and move it out of the way thread about the tensioner http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopi ... 0tensioner New vernier gear goes back in the same position that the old cam gear was at the time you pulled it off. 1. Engine bay as it is at the moment
2. Timing sprocket and chain and possibly a white dot to mark TDC? Can anyone confirm that? 3. Bolts that MAY need removing? Anyone know? 4. Engine bay from the side If anyone has a moment to provide some info it will help out alot. Thanks all. |

sounds like the 2 bolts have hung up, just keep turning they will come out, this is what happens wehen the pressure is not released correctly, you just wound em all out in order instead of cracking them all, then working round em again.

those other bolts are the head bolts mate, take them out and your in a world of fun if a cam change is proving hard for you, you don't wanna lift the head.

lol yeah figured those bolts might be as much...... it's just getting this lifting gear off.... after i do it once i should have it down for the next time... just getting it done the first time is a biatch |

is that what that hissing noise was? i did crack them all and then undid them all in a diagonal fasion, although didnt turn them far enough to release the pressure evenly... i did just end up screwing them out, they came out fine. no i meant once youve pulled the rocker gear off the head and sit it somewhere, then sit the end bolts back in as they hold it together.... not neccessary but good practice anyway, especially if you have no idea how to put the assmebly back together
rocker gear comes straight off, just lever it up both sides till it comes off |
