When you take the existing chain off, wipe it down & place it on top of the new chain. Transfer the marks to the new chain from the old one by making some scratch marks on the corresponding links. You could use a felt tipped pen.

Align the sprockets as per the repair manual when installing the new chain. If there aren't any marks on the existing chain, count the links between the sprocket timing marks before removing the chain. Double check as a tooth out will give you some headaches after.

Read the manual, use the marks on the gears.

yeah,,it don't matter where the chain is so long as you get the three marks lined up.

AU's dont have the same marks on the sprokets and blocks like the E-Series do. I know a number of people who have come to grief trying to time an EL Hybrid/AU engine the same as the regular e-series.

Oh, that explains the grief i had with a late xh motor.

Also I found a few differences with crank gearing, marks on in different spots.

Yeah, the 98 XH's would've gotten the hybrid engine - early 96 models got the 12 counterweight EF crank.

Some handy pics of the hybrid timing marks:

Also wondering if anyone has pics of how the guides are setup and where they all go?

I have the two main ones setup on either side but just wondering where the third small one goes.

thanks

looks good to me!

The third one (small) wedges in the timing cover at the lowest point.

Kinda between the aux and crank.
