I've got a tickford head i was considering putting on me EF, but before i do i was gunna get some work done to it, probly a cam, performance valvesprings, head shave and maybe some porting(budget permitting). I was wondering how much i should get shaved off, atm i was thinking 20thou? More? Less? any suggestions on any of the head work would be appreciated

Tickford head compression is about 9.3:1 for a Ticky head to start with.

depends what condition your motor is in, if you shave the head to much obviously compression is going to be raised, if your ring are getting old you the eng will suffer from a heap of blow-by.

If it was me i would sell the tickford head and get a stock 1 to do the work on. Why waste a tickford head they are worth a fair bit to the right buyer.

The eng is in pretty good cond, 180,000, serviced regularly. The tickford head bumps the comp. ratio from 9.3:1 (standard) to 9.35:1, a 0.05 gain in compression is barely worth considering, hence the reason why i want to shave it.

don't cut down a tickford head. a stock tickford head is always gonna get good $$$ molest a stocker.. you said it yourself there is a minimal comp difference between the 2, just deck the block and head of a stocker there are good figures to be had there as well.
ticky heads pretty much had larger exhaust ports and "slightly" higher comp. I will corrected if I am wrong.. oh yeah and a hot looking T on the front.

the tickford head just had larger exhaust valves (std 39mm, t-41mm) the gain from the larger exhaust valves and a bit of tidying the ports will outweigh doing the std head up, ports are same afaik, and chamber was a cc or 2 smaller giving the comp raise

Thats exactly my point, why start with a stock head when i can start with something thats already a bit performance orientated, which would result in a high performance gain by the end

just do the tickford one. it's only a head and you already have it. if you're looking for a little performence dont guess at how much to shave of it.
have the chambers CC'd and calulate how much to take off to get the compression you need. while having the CCing done is a good time to deshroud the valves too resulting in a little better flow |
