I am thinking of knocking up an adjustable shift kit for the au. Should it be on or off (hard shift or soft shift) whilst towing? A lot of the tow is in 100 kmh zones...

Well the idea behind the shiftkit is that reducing time between gears means less heat which means less damage to the box. towing would only increase the load and heat that is produced as there is more torque being applied to the box, so in that regard, you're better off turning it on.
Others are of the opinion that a shiftkit is useless in a stock/mildly modded falcon, and will only hurt it (can't remember exactly why). Either way, if you have a transmission cooler (fitted to all vehicles that came from factory with a tow-pack i believe) then you should be fine.

my s**t shifter hasn't s**t it self, well almost a year. so far I haven't had any problems with it. especially carrying a s**t load of equipment/material up hills, in traffic & a quick getta away from slow moving s**t drivers.
by the way, its on full time & it feels like s**t when switched off.

I paid like $5, and $3 of that would have been the switch.
Performance gain? Not entirey certain about an increase in straight line acceleration, i'd say a tiny increase yeah, you can really feel the car lurching forwards when changing gears when you're giving it some. Looky here for full thread and peoples opinions

price goes up if you want a adjustable 10watt 0-5 ohms resistor potentiometer. you can dial in 0 for normal {off} or 1 to 5 for firmness {on}
