Hi, after putting a new cam in my car yesterday, one of the rockers shattered and the 3 shims fell down into the oil gallery or whatever it is on the intake side of the head. Is there any way of getting these out without taking the motor out? will they come out just by draining the oil or am i pretty much stuffed? Also if anyone has a set of ef rocker gear lying around id be very interested lol. Any help would be great.

Cheers

We need pics for s**t and giggles.

Do you know what the cause of the rocker arm failure was? incorrect installation (too many shims, not enough piston/valve clearance etc.), or was it just it's time ot go?

i dropped one of the little tappered collets that hold the valve springs down there when i did my cam change  I got it out by getting a piece of tube (which was originaly out of a fishtank) and cutting up a fridge magnet, i then pushed the pieces of magnet into the tube, threaded the tube down into the sump and bingo got it! ......on the otherhand this was a major fluke but it might be worth a go, it worked for me :D

I'm not to sure what caused it, it could have been from over tightening the rockers, as far as i know it was shimmed right, i did it exactly how it says on teh alted website. I've been told that it woudlnt be a problem to leave them in the sump if i cant get them out, they wont be able to be sucked up by the oil pump.

When installing my cam, a lifter was lost somewhere, it was never found. It didn't fall into any of the galleries as they were plugged up with rags prior to undoing anything. But never found it. Best guess is it's in the car somewhere as it didn't make the ground.

This is why you should always block those oil holes up with some paper towels.

as long as it falls into the oil return gallery, back into the sump. use a large magnet to draw it towards the oil drain plug, use a wire or long nose plier to force the bastard out.

I dropped 2 shims in mine a few months ago.A magnet from the sump plug wont work. The hole is to small to get the shims out. I used a flexible tool with magnet at the end. I went in from the oil galleries in the head and just pushed it back and forward. After a few minutes it pulled the shims back out.
