I can vouch for what Adrian said regarding the retainers...I haven't had a ticking lifter since the first day I started the motor. Only thing is, you'll need to hold the lifters into place by using sticky tape while you put the gear back onto the head. They lifters will fall out...and if you don't have your oil return galleries thingy blocked, expect them in the sump.
Here is an image to what I mean by sticky/masking tape. phong =P~

What phong has suggested ^^^ there works fine, i use that method everytime i have to remove the rocker and ill be using it again tommorrow when i replace that ticking lifter i have.
Just remember before tightening the rocker gear down completely that you remove the tape holding the lifters in. On one occasion i forgot to remove the tape before tightening the rocker gear down and found out the hard way, had to loosen all those bloody 10mm bolts just to get the tape out from underneath each lifter |

old thread i know,
but with the lifters/hlas, how should they be when fitting them with shims? i forced mine down the bore of the lifter arm and they were basically stuck lol i only did this as the lifters didnt have any spring to them (there was a spring inside them, they just didnt spring if you get me) so should the hla be springy and free in the bore, or short and not springy and stuck in the bore?

I just installed new HLAs using masking tape to hold them in place. They were pre-oiled so I didn't dismantle them or soak them in oil. Just used some oil when installing HLAs & shims in each rocker.
If you pulled some used ones apart like I did once, then insert a piece of wire through the centre to release the oil pressure (which stops them compressing fully). They'll be noisy on startup but will settle down after a while when they expand. Make sure the shims are installed with 3 marks facing each respective HLA. That's to allow oil into each HLA. One final thing, use a low strength Loctite (or similar) on the rocker gear bolts when reassembling. The theads need to be clean.

Does any one have a photo of how the new shims go together with the old ones. And where they go.

i never understood the lil HLAs lol.
i just soaked mine in petrol, then released them with a small screw driver, flushed them all out and then put them back together with a light film of oil. will see if it will make any difference. i'm fairly sure i'll have to pull them out again next week because none of them have the O-ring on them and i'm broke atm, so cant go buy any. but i had to pull the rocker gear off today anyway, so thought i'd give em a clean. i also noticed a few of my shims were around the wrong way, so was good to give them clean and turn em up the right way. ill take a pic of the shims and rocker gear for you now james

sorry mate, ended up doing bit of work lol
the shims are just a washed with 3 lines facing the centre on one side and a single line going straight accross the middle on the other. you just put in 2 for a wade cam (from what ive read some other might take 3) as long as the lifters are in good nick and everything is alligned properly, its pretty simple stuff.

So you just put 2 of the shims in the same waay then the lifter goes in as usual

yeah man, thats it.
i didnt even know what a shim was or looked like lol i just went to the wreckers and pulled down the rocker gear and yeah, theyre just a washer basically. and f**k paying for them, i just pocketed them from the wreckers cam was $50 second hand and that was the total cost of the install as ive got fresh gskets from when i did my head gasket

I could finish my top end rebuild today because of shims and lifters..
EA Rocker gear: I have 24 x 14mm shims, and only 8 complete 14mm HLA's.. ED Rocker gear: I have 12 x 11mm shims, and 12 complete HLA's.. The head is ED on EA block... Should I get new 14mm HLA's and use the EA rockers, or another set of 11mm HLA's and use the ED rockers people? Really comes down to which lifters are better.. EA or ED? |

They are all 1.9mm think
EA's had 14mm shims ED's had 11mm shims. Not sure where in between they changed.. I just wanna finish my car!! If I just get some 11mm shims and run the ED rockers, I might even get some new lifters anyway.. These guys have them http://www.shiftkits.com.au/index.php?main_page=products_all And I don't think 14mm lifters are available anymore..? |

Later ED's had the smaller lifters... And I'd be using them. Less weight make for better engine revving and smoothness.
Also the earlier EA/B/D shims came in 3 thicknesses, not just the 1 like the smaller lifters. |
