i have a wade 1636 regrind sitting on my desk at work, i know that i need to get shims to put the cam in, but i'm not 100% on a couple of things.
can anyone confirm if its the 11mm diametre shims i need for my EL ? and apparently you buy them from ford, is there a certain number you call ? how do you actually go about ordering them and who do you speak to ? Cheers!

Yes, 11mm shims are the correct ones. A cheaper option is go to the wreckers, if you can, and get the rocker gear. The 12 shims from Ford are about $5 each, and the rocker gear is about $25 from the wreckers.
If you use Ford, just go to the Spare Parts section and ask for the HLA shims to fit an EF/EL.

Yep, the 11mm shims are the ones you want, seeing as the lifters are also 11mm.
As Shortshift said, get it from the wreckers if you can as they will be a bit cheaper. |

Also forgot to say that if you go to Repco, you can get a HLA 'repair kit' for $21 which consists of the 12 seals to hold the HLAs in the rockers. The old ones will be brittle. Part number is LA591 (thanks to another Fordmods chap for the info).
Bursons and Ford don't know what you're talking about when you mention it.

Or you could just get a stack of .9/1mm hardened washers to put into the rocker arms as well. Be even cheaper again.
And its not advisable to put the retainers back onto the lifters with a reground cam. The retainer can cause the lifter to get stuck in the bore. |

Advertising them, not necessarily volunteering them.

Maybe that's why I heard someone say "use grease instead of retainers when reassembling the rocker gear". Not doubting your comments, but if the 2 shims and retainer are seated properly what's your thoughts on how they get stuck? I'm about to reassemble some EF rocker gear (for a reground cam).

If you look inside the bore of the rocker arm, you will see the top 1/3 is properly machined and of a slightly larger diametre compared to the rest of the bore.
This is demonstrated that if you put a lifter in with a retainer installed, the first 2/3 of the way in its generally a bit tight and you have to force it in. Once it hits the machined point, it slides in without an issue and moves up and down easily. So when you put an additional 2/3/4mm of shim into the rocker arm, you are pushing that retainer downwards, into the unmachined area of the bore, where it can get stuck and bind. When the cam moves the rocker, the outer body of the lifter is designed to slide up and down the bore. But if it binds, or is generally just hard to move, you can get the undesirable 4L rocker noise, or worst case the dreaded ticking. And even worst case, the lifter will get stuck mid way in the bore and you have to pull the f**k apart and replace the rocker! |

Thanks arm79. Well, that explains what happened on the EA rocker gear I'm running at present. After adding extra shims for a reground Wade cam last year, and not replacing or removing the retainers, I've got ticking noises coming from the rockers. Looks like I just wasted $21 buying the repair kit.
I think I'll bookmark this page to refer others too when someone else raises the subject. Cheers

I never had any problems with Wade cams I had. They only required an extra 1.8mm (or thereabouts) of shim, and the retainer seemed to always be in the right spot.
When I got to the higher lift cams (JMM, RPD, etc) I started noticing the problem. Don't worry, I learnt my lessons and wasted some $$$ as well. The old RPD section has alot of info on the retainers and ticking. But its now all been lost unfortunately. Too much shim will also cause ticks and valve train noise... So don't put too much shim in. |
