Hey. So I've got a re gound cam and I need shims.
I've called ford and asked for them. They have no idea what im talking about. Can someone please give me a part number or a good description of where they go in the head. Because I've explained it to them and they still don't get me... |

Because I've explained it to them and they still don't get me... ...tell them it's the shim that is sandwiched between the lifters and cavity of the rocker arm...PapaSmurf will be able to tell you the part number.

Because I've explained it to them and they still don't get me... hey bud go to a wrecker and grab a set from some rocker gear hanging about, i got em from pick a part for $2, and as far as i know Ford dont sell the 14mm shims anymore, which is what you need if youve got an EB engine from memory

Ford parts people may not recognise what you're after because they are technically NOT SHIMS!!!
They are in fact simply the Lash Adjuster Base Plates. Their purpose is to provide a hardened face for the Adjusters to ride against (they would otherwise chew thru the alloy of the rockers VERY quickly) and have slots for oil supply to the adjusters on the contact face as well as an oil bleed slot on the back. I'd be really interested to see what the ford parts computer actually calls them but I repeat: they ARE NOT "SHIMS" according to the correct definition of same. This is the same as people calling "adjustable" I6 cam gears "vernier cam gears" - which they fecking well are NOT!!! They are "slot adjustable cam gears". Proper "Vernier" couplings are made up of THREE interlocking parts that rely on differential numbers of teeth on the TWO meshes for adjustment. The gears used on I6 are evidently NOT that type - they are simply slot adjustable...

vernier being a general explanation of a graduated scale movable in fractional increments used relative of a larger scale I would say it's not exactly not a vernier cam gear....
not that I'm an engineer though see below

Proper vernier cam gears do exist for various engines... - they work as I've described - ie. there are two sets of meshing teeth at different pitches.
Altho... - I can't get hold of one of these I6 gears right now - but if they indeed have two sets of differently graduated scales between inner and outer moving sections - such as those on Vernier Calipers then I may have to stand corrected.... In that case I might indeed be thinking "Adjustable Vernier Cam Gear" rather than "Vernier Adjustable Cam Gear" In other words, if there's no differential 2-part scale or differential sets of meshing members then there is no "vernier" anything involved and it's as I said: simply "slot adjustable".

So no wreckers can be f**k to pull them down to get the ... shims...haha.
And they won't let me get them my self. So I tried ford. The 3.9l ones are obsolete, and he knew exactly what I was talking about when I said lifter shims. Got a different guy this time. Tried a few engine shops and manage to find 2 in a huge box of old collets. So I went to bursons and found something a bees d**k differance in size from one of their suppliers and will just use them if they fit. For now im just running the standard cam. |

I wasn't having a go about people calling them shims as such - I do myself - just pointing out that shiney bums with no clue will probably have trouble finding them as I doubt they're actually technically called "shims" in the parts listings - but that's not speaking from definite knowledge.
Fecking wreckers! - once upon a time you could go to a yard with your cantilever box and spend a day and $120 to scrounge up enough gear to need a ute to take it all away - and there'd be vehicles from 1940's onward out in the yard. If you can travel to a country town in reasonable time, you could try the local mechanic shop and/or wrecker there - have been a few times I've managed to find obscure bits for older cars that way.

Will see what these shims from bursons will be like. The problem is they don't have the small knotches on the faces.
Wreckers s**t me these days. No pre 2000. No getting you're own parts. They don't wanna get the part you need cos its not worth it...um, im paying you. That's Not how you make money. |

That's Not how you make money. those are oil slots and are required to run the lifters properly since they are hydraulic, find another wrecker !

Yea right. Bugger. Ohwell. Only like $1 each or something anyway.
Probably will end up getting ebseries2 rocker assembily and extra shims for it. Wouldbe easier then finding ea shims. But ima wait and save up for a chip and tune so I can have it running sweet rather then hunting aqll over the joint. |
