I've got an EL Futura. While at the dyno shootout on the weekend a guy came up to me and mentioned an EF XR6 head that he has for sale. How much difference is there with this head and the standard EL head?
If I got it I would probably get it flowed a bit and get a DEV5 cam put in before it went on the car. If I was going to get a head flowed anyway, would i be better off with the XR head, or just getting a standard head (for a cheaper price)? Thanks guys

I was told all the JMM cams will run with the stock ECU. I'd eventually look at a uni chip, but that wont be happening for a while unless i win loto.

it depends on what he is asking for the head and the condition.
it has a few positives over the standard head though oversize exhaust valves stronger valve springs decked 20 thou to raise comp ratio theres a few more things thay they have also Brad (waggin) was running a DEV5 cam with standard comp for a while so it can be done.

Well the head is naked, no valves or springs, so i'd be getting heavier springs and new valves while im at it. He is asking $200 for it.

I would buy it for 200 (although see if you can get it for 150)
Get a monster port job done and then install it. I dont know about idle quality but I might be tempted to wack it on with your current cam and do the camshaft later on when you can do the chip, springs, lifters, timing gear, etc. as well.

I'd probably get it ported flowed etc (what ever people usually do with heads) and get the big cam, springs and valves fitted, put an adjustable timing gear on, and get it all ready, then I only need to do one swap over.

the plus of using that head would be no need to spend money on having larger exhaust valves fitted, the machine work is already done.
and you can have the head done while still driving your car around. for $200 i'd get it. most places wouldn't sell you a stock head for that price |

And then I have a T on my head
Then I can remove the "Falcon Futura" badge on the back, which I don't like the look of and put a pair of tickford wings on to cover the holes. I can justify the tickford logo then

Rapiers right, the valves are only 1 mm bigger, not much difference and 20 thou off the head not that much difference.
Tickford heads aren't all they are cracked up to be, mainly you are paying for a "T" on your head. Go ahead and waste your money if you like.

valves are actually 2mm difference there is a bit difference when u hold the valves face to face, some tickfor heads go for 10 times the price as standard. often its best to spend the money on a standard head. tickford heads are good if u want something a little bit better dont expect big gains from using a tickford head tho

Go ahead and waste your money if you like. the valves are 2mm bigger and if that is a waste, why are they there? and why do all the I6 builders go to the trouble of fitting them? if you were to take a stock head to a machine shop and ask only to have the 41mm valves fited you will pay more then the $200 asking price for this head the ports are a different shape too. you may end up with the same shape port in the end but it will be cheaper to get a tickford done than a stock head. the valve seats are already cut for the 41mm valves and the port jod has already been started by the factory. and the bonus of not have to wait with no car while the work is done. |

Just make sure you get a hardness test done, take it to the place where your getting the head work done and they should do the test for nothing. Run a straight edge over the head face and over where the cam sits. Might save wasting money on a stuffed head.

Exactly for that money id take it bugger paying to have it done by a shop....saves money having something that was done on a production line and produced in thousands then pay to have it done to your own
