hey guys, been having problems with idle and hunting for a while now, the car isnt really drivable, its too unreliable.
Recently water started streaming out the side of the engine, havnt had that fixed yet, didnt seem to effect idle quality or anything So im suspecting that it might be welsh plugs, but after i get that sorted should i take the car to a mechanic shop or dyno to sort out my hunting and unreliability of the car? im hoping that getting a decent tune will sort out this headache.. just not sure where to go. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Cheers guys |

Also just to let you know what ive done so far about the idle/hunting isue..
I have adjusted timing, have tried setting it back to 0deg TDC, idles ok but absolutely no power, Tried advancing it, really rough hunting idle, but better performance, tried Retarding it, similar to 0deg TDC.. just no power, i put my foot to the floor after i lined the timing guide up with the timing mark and it struggled to hit 60km/h with full throttle. Changed spark plugs, havnt touched leads yet (they look like a pain in the rear to get to). I adjusted base idle via throttle body idle screw (procedure posted in the 8's forum) Thats what ive done so far off the top of my head.. i think i may need to take it to a professional, but yea... just not sure where |

unless its got j3 chip of after market ecu there really is nothing to tune..
but a good mechanic should be able to retrieve any fault codes from the ecu and test and trouble shoot any bad sensors... |

Do you have some way of custom tuning the car? = dyno
Or are you just after a fix for the idle and tune up? = mechanic. You'll often find places that have dyno's also do general mechanical as well. they'll probably try and talk you into putting the car on the dyno (to get extra money out of you) If you don't a tunable chip, dyno is a waste of money. |

im currently running a J3 Chip, with the 6DJA maps on it

i would remove the j3 temporarly to see if the problem is still there..
if the problem goes away your j3 needs to be tuned... |

take the J3 out and have a good mechanic get it running properly and then refit the J3.

i thought the J3 was necessary to run the tickford engines as i have the fairmont ghia tickford maps on the J3?

na its not necessory on a tickford engine!!...but with it you might gain a few kw..
but with aftermarket cams its recommended.. |

the standard ECU will run with some largish cams.
Removing it will make fault finding easier, as it make things less complex and the guy doing the work can't just blame the chip. |
