Hey guys,

My car has made some tiny oil patches on the driveway as you may of guessed. Upon inspection I found the sump plug itself to be covered in a thin layer of oil.

Does the plug have a washer or an o-ring or something? Because the plug, so far, is the only place I can see that it is coming from. I did the last oil change myself and secured the plug myself, and it has been without a problem up till now. So, little help?

yeah there is supposed to be a little gasket between the bolts and the sump

F**k, well if I look around more and it's the only place the oil is coming from, should I do an oil/filter change and buy a new plug from Ford?

the existing plug should be allright, next time you do an oil change, ask for a plastic sump plug washer, they seal very well, and you dont have to do the sump plug up ultra tight to stop it leaking

if it isn't too bad and you can live with the marks on the drive way then leave it be until the oil is about 5000k's old and then do a servie, need to keep an extra eye out to make sure the level doesn't drop too much.

and as said get a sump plug washer, i use the aluminium items, didn't know you could get plastic.

the only time you need to change the plug is if the thread gets damaged or worn.

Dont get one from ford.

When your doing your next oil change remove the sump plug and clean it off to reveal its PART number, write the part number down then go to Repco, the plug itself should only set you back $3-$4 but it does not come with a gasket or seal.

Take car when you are inserting / removing the plug itself because if you strip the thread on the sump itself you have basicly just f**k the sump, so take it easy when u unscrew it

Checked oil today and was on the full mark. So I suppose I shouldn't worry. Still there is a fair amount of it on the bottom sump, even looks like the leak may come from the front of the sump where it joins the engine. If that is the case what's the best course of action? (for when oil level becomes a problem)

Gah!, lol. Would be great if I could just tighten the bolts. :D But it can be anything major at the moment atleast if my dipstick reads full.

did u hit anything, like run over a gutter or something that might have hit the sump? did u check to make sure u did the oil filter up properly. ive had mine leak once before.

The best course of action is to clean up around the area to determine exactly where the oil is coming from.

It may be leaking from the sump gasket, and might just need tightening up on the sump bolts.

Or it may be leaking from the timing case seal. This will require the harmonic balancer to be removed

Good plan mate, I'll go spray some degreaser there and rinse.

i had mine degreasered 2 weeks ago and i got oil there again..so going back to get it sorted now...
