I have an EBII and it only has one muffler, but you have a fairmont and maybe that has two. Or maybe you are thinking the cat is a muffler?
If the hole is in the cat or the first muffler then it is enough to be the sole cause of the s**t performance. I once took the exhaust off my 350chev and it ran like a dog with about 30% normal power. Another example, possibly almost exactly the same as yours, my XG (same motor as EBII) just had a big hole in the first muffler and the performance below 4000rpm was about 65%.

Well I'm pretty sure my system goes-
Cat Small Muffler Large Muffler Med Muffler It looks like a fairly recent system so what I was thinking was to replace the damaged muffler with straight pipe - I think its a 2.25 or 2.5 inch system. If your saying that your EBII had only one muffler then surely I shouldnt have any problems with 2!

In terms of losing power a large hole of course basically negates any mufflers fitted after it. I strongly recommend forgeting about the power/running situation until you've fixed the hole, it really makes a whacking big difference. Because i live in a semi-remote area etc i decided to make a temporary repair to mine till i get it fixed properly (i am probably going straight pipe too). I cut a piece of sheet steel to size then put three beads of silicone around it, then clamped it on and drilled and riveted. I don't know how long the silicone will last but it's doing fine so far.

Yeah - I mean to be honest I didnt think much of the power before the damage...but I have put some injector cleaner in the fuel and I think that may have helped a bit with the situation!

Heres a little bump/update...
An NRMA bloke just happened to behind my car when I started it and he straight away pointed out there was something wrong with my centre muffler! He walked under the car (on jacks ) and gave the muffler a hit and said it was stuffed! Everthing inside loose and floating around! He asked if I;d been experiencing a lack of power and higher fuel consumption.....hmmm wow thats exactly what I've been experiencing! Booked in on Monday at MIDAS and for $150 I'll get a new section there!
