hey all

thought i might post up some pics of my exciting sunday arvo, helping pull off a mates head! :)

the gasket was starting to leak coolant, and the head was required for some porting & polishing, so we spent the arvo pulling it apart! we got the digi out and took some happy snaps along the way - it was quite straight forward really, considering neither of us have done this before!

bonnet was removed, thermo fans ripped out, plugs/leads/throttle cable etc all moved out of the way.

then the intake & exhaust manifolds had to be unbolted - the exhaust was a pain in that the comp pacemaker extractors twist & turn, hiding access to some of the bolts. the intake manifold was a pain too, as the lower row of bolts towards the firewall proved difficult to get fat hands to!

from there its a pretty straight-forward thing anyway - just undo the bolts, and rip it all off! :P

the only thing is marking the timing chain to make sure it stays in the right spot!

cam rocker gear etc all removed - now just the head bolts etc to be undone, which is where we struck our first major issue - the 4th bolt does not want to budge - we chewed several sockets/spanners, and managed to crack a sidchrome piece! :?

ppft next time leave the intake manifold on... and pull the head off with it on and remove it after wards... but then u have to take all the injecotr looms off

That makes for a very heavy piece to lift out afterwards.

Yeah, i'm goin to Repco now to buy an impact socket or spanner to get the rest of these bastards out.

Just get a single hex 14mm socket - I paid seven bucks for mine from Total Tools, and it got all those stubborn mother fu.... head bolts off no problem - just a lot of force.

By the way, taking the intake manifold off the head makes it easy to lift the head off - I lifted it by myself no problems.

thats what an impact socket is. so yeah having lunch then i'm going.

I have to do this on my ED soon so this is all good info...

i think I'll leave the inlet mani on though, bit harder to get to the bolts on the older manifolds

quick tip zip tie the chain to the cam sprocket saves making it as ya dont have to remove it

Well...all it took in the end was 2 bastard files, a 13mm impact socket, a knuckle bar, an extension bar and a sledgehammer!

But girlfriend and I managed to get that stuck head bolt off.

Pics will come when she emails them to me.

before you ask, we filed down the head bolt (to about 13.5mm) from 14mm then hit the socket onto the bolt with the 1 pound sledgie and the used the knuckle bar to pry it loose.

I'm expecting 2 replacement bits from sidchrome soon.
The rest of the bolts came out with just the knuckle bar and the 14mm impact socket that I'd bought with the 13mm one.

Once I have all the photos, I'll take photos of it all and write a doco of it to help future people out.

what did u do to stop the timing chain coming off down the bottom. i see you have zip tied it to the cam gear. i thought you had to keep some sort of tension on the chain?

There isn't enough room for the chain to fall clear of the bottom sprockets teeth if the bottom chain guide is in place.
