Hi Guys
Anyone know what could cause a small puff of black smoke on startup? I recently had a new Redback exhaust system fitted to my NA BA XR6 with Pacemaker comp extractors and a hi-flo CAT, and was out the back to admire the note while a mate cranked it over. I noticed a small puff of black smoke which only came out when first started. Is this normal? Signs of it running too rich? Smoke is definitly black and not blue. Do I need to reset the ECU to adjust it to run better with the new exhaust system? Any ideas appreciated. JB |

is it still doing it or is it a once off? just slightly rich on startup, no big deal...before cars get to a set temp they run a richer mixture (like a choke)...wouldnt stress about it unless it becomes a large cloud of smoke hehe

As far as I know, it always seems to do it when I have looked out the back over the last couple of weeks. Is using more fuel than I think it should and smells like it. Is this due to the exhaust upgrade?

my girlfriend's car was blowing black smoke because her car needed the oil changed badly.... check the oil, just in case

Oil was changed about a month ago, but it is looking darker that I think it should. I have been told in the past that oil can get dirty quickly if the engine runs rich...true??? Something about the oil becoming contaminated with too much fuel in the chamber. Sounds like a vicious circle!!!

A mate bought a BA ute (xls) everytime he started it, there was a puff of black smoke.
Concider it Normal! I wouldn't worry about it... just don't look at your own car at night in the mirror if your giving it heaps... you'll never smile again!

I think this may be something to do with high-flow cats letting through more unburnt fuel then normal cats. I have a system on my el xr and it blows a little bit of balck smoke very occasinally as well I took of quick the other night, and looked in my side mirror just before redline to see a puff of smoke shoot out Made me a very sad man to say the least, but the car's only done 136 000! I don't think it's anything to worry about though, my car uses f**k all oil. I've been behind newish (2000 model) wrxs and skylines with an exhaust system and when they've dumped it clouds of smoke have come out (even though they do probably thrash their cars all the time

Cheers, DAN Not true actually, you actually get more power from leaning out you're mixture, it just isn't very good for the engine that's all.
