I realise this has been covered A fair bit but nothing answers my question specifically. Car is in signature. 248,000 on bottom end, 80,000 on head. 3500km on plugs and Air Filter. 25000km on leads, 15000km on fuel filter. Coil is two years old. Very well maintained and in general runs well.

I have been told the old girl is blowing a noticable amount of black smoke when you put the foot in. Fuel consumption isn't the greatest either, 200km to about 35L. So 17l/100km city driving. Car also feels abit sluggish, excessively so when the air con is on and in the undercover car park at work I can also smell a distinct strong smell of petrol. It also misses slighly when you tap the accelerator on idle.

I have unplugged the Map sensor and started her up and she ran like a absolute DOG! Heaps of black smoke on idle and hanging revs so I would presume the MAP is doing its job. I have also replaced the O2 sensor and it didn't seem to have any effect. What I want to know is where should I go to next?

Have you checked the HEGO sensor? and, when you changed the MAP sensor, did you clean out the hole in the manifold where the hose goes to?
With the HEGO, it might be worth taking it out and cleaning it with a wire brush and replacing.

Have you ran any injector cleaners or octane boost products etc. i would clean the map sensor hose (if it was me would put 1L kero in the tank) or injector cleaner and see what happens,

Thanks for the replies guys.

Yeah I have already changed the oxygen sensor about 6 months ago(I presume thats what your referring to with HEGO Sensor?). It hasn't seemed to effect performance or economy unfortunetely.

I will have a look at the vacumn hose behind the inlet manifold as you suggested and while I'm there might also check the Air Temp sensor. Do you honestly feel that injector cleaner does work? I was just going to go and buy some reco AU injectors from ebay as I thought that might have been the next step but if you think it truly works I'll try the cleaner I guess?
