My ef GLi has done 290km.
Im using fully synthetic oil (shell heliux ultra 5w50). When i start it no matter if its warm or cold it has a nice puff of black smoke come out the exhaust. I think it may be the valve's clogged up with crap but im really not sure whats causing it. Its normally black smoke, which suggest oil or fuel. I am thinking of pulling the head of and giving it a freashen up with new valve seals, clean up the vales and what not. I got a RPD Rspec1 to go in too. So i thought of giving the head a nice clean up and maybe do new valve springs for something like an R6 later. But its got me rooted what is causing the smoke on startup. Any idea's anyone?

Black smoke is unburnt fuel. To happen only on startup would mean a leaking injector or two.
Oil is grey/blue. If grey/blue and only on startup or on sudden acceleration then that is valve stem seals (can be done without removing the head). cheers Scott

If your going to run oil that thin, 5W something, you might need to change the PCV Valve to a Grey one, off a late series 1 AU or AUII.
This helps to lessen oil consumption.

What is the PCV valve? Positive Crankcase Ventilation Valve. Valiants have had them since 1962 till they folded. Holden started to use them in 65/66, the same as Ford. They are part of the pollution setup.

This helps to lessen oil consumption. How will a different PCV valve lessen oil consumption....I just dont get it here...as in this vaccume valve does what in terms of the motor.

This is what Ford did when people complained of oil consumption on the first of the AU's, they had a black PCV valve, remembering that the oil used in them was 5W30. Ford changed to the grey one, which has a smaller hole in it. I was working on them when they were brand new & saw the TSB's for certain probs.

This helps to lessen oil consumption. he's running a thick oil at normal operating temps 5W-50. to get to normal temps doesn't take long in a falcon. I wouldn't worry about it |

Sounds like leaky injectors to me. Have you tried any injector cleaner???
Try that first, and it helps if you give it a good run, like about 200km nonstop. at hi-way speeds.

injector cleaner that is added to your fuel has a use when your injectors haven't been serviced in a while, if you injector is leaking that much you will probably have to get them cleaned @ around $20 each
