hi all,
need a hand with a problem only happend afew days ago, but after i took out the sparkplugs from an el falcon straight 6 to inspect them, and then put them back in after driving in the next few days to the seems to not have enough energy to move eg. (when your at the lights its its abit hilly the car revs very high and you need to put your foot down to get the car moving...like its starting in 2nd gear?!?... feels like its stuck in a gear what is causing this problem? im thinking bad sparkplug leads? or gearbox?? i would say its a gearbox issue, when there is a problem with the 4sd auto wether its an electrical fault or a solinoid the box will go into a limp home mode locking the auto into 3rd gear

thanks for the reply, the car starts off ok for afew minutes from cold, seems to shift ok then at any given time after it seems to be stuck? will a gearbox service fix this problem? what sort of cost would this be? weird tho cause this problem happend just after the sparkplugs were fitted.

hmm that is really strange it happend just when the sparkplugs were fitted, yet it does that still with when it seems to be stuck in a gear and struggling... check sparkplug leads are on right, becuz they can be hard to push on sometimes u need to twist them aswel

yer mate of course, if one isnt one right then there wont be spark getting to the spark plug so it will feel like the car is missing... when cars miss they kinda take off realy slow and then when u get up it in the after 3 or 4 grand rpm they will start to take off, but down low got nothing, kinda hard to explain if a car is missing, but u know it if ur in it... its in ur el so its only a 10 sec job to go over them all and push them in make sure they in right.
who put the new plugs in? you or a mechanic?

Yea make sure whn you push the leads on they sort of "pop" on.
Did you put the leads back on the right plugs, and did you messs around with the distributer at all or just the plug side. |

yer usually u take one lead off then take the plug out, then put the new plug in and then put the lead back on and then move onto the next plug... so then you dont put the leads in the wrong place making them fire in the wrong time

check your plugs and leads,
also back in the day when my car was auto if the tranny fluid level was low it would do as you describe, The auto works on oil pressure so not having enough fluid can cause it to get stuck in gear. Varying temperatures will cause the fluid to expand and contract so you may notice it doesnt happen all the time or only at a certain time or circumstance, so check your fluid level may be the easy way out, Brad

You should also check your leads.
I dunno how everyone else tests them. But I just look in the ends of them. You can usually tell if they are stuffed. In the ends should be nice silver colour. If its rusty its rooted And check the lead is not burnt. White spots on the leads. Also I think you can remove one at a time at night and look in them when the car is runing and see spark. Someone could confirm this for me. |

that could possibly well be it to sounds of those symptoms too. i wouldnt be able to second that tho becuz i never owned a auto lol. but he should check the level and see how he goes aye cuz thats a high possibility too

just woundering, cause the el dont have a dipstick, if the gearbox oil is low or old would that cause the car to go into limp mode sometimes?

Get the box serviced.
If it was a dodgy lead or plug the motor would be running rough ie missing, lumpy at idle. |
