hi guys,
got a little issue i was wondering if someone could clear up,the low coolant light is constantly on now(93 xr6 sedan),ive put more coolant in it,run it for about 10 minutes constantly filling it up,but it stays on. I would like to clear i havent driven the car in the past month(been away on holidays, cars in the shed) and there is no coolant leaks at all. does anyone have any idea wha the problem could be?and what im looking at to fix it by a mechanic? would it be safe to drive the car to the workshop(its about 2-3km mostly downhill) or should i get a towie? last question,a mate reckons its a faulty coolant level sensor and that its ok to drive just dont flog it and check the coolant every day, what do you think on this theory? thanks in advance for any help |

If the water isn't disappearing then I would say it's just a sensor. Also check your engine oil. Is it milky? if it is you may have a head gasket issue.

i had the car stationary in my driveway warming it up and one of the hoses popped off and dumped coolant everywhere,i put the hose back on(bad clamp) and filled it up,the low coolant light came on so i thought it may have been an air bubble or something so i ran it for about 10 mins and the coolant level did go down alittle while i was putting more in.
i serviced the car the day before this happened, and the oil that came out of it wasnt milky. |

IF its not loosing water then the switch in the tank is likely to be faulty. These switches are nothing more than a float switch and over time the plastic float gets brittle and cracks, coolant gets in and the float doesn't float anymore. Now you can't just buy the float, you have to buy the whole switch. Which from memory is about $50-$60

ive had alot of people say its probably a faulty sensor.
If nothings leaking and the car isnt overheating, oils not milky im starting to think its a faulty sensor or something minor along those lines, but would i be correct in saying its fairly safe to drive providing nothing is leaking or overheating etc etc and i just have to put up with the stupid light on? |

Yeah it should be safe to drive. Just get another switch and you should be set.

not to sound like a complete noob, but i have one more question and im not to familiar with the mechanical side of cars but i am learning....slowly.
this sensor/switch thing what exactly does it do and whats the downside to it being broken and does it cause any harm to the car? |

Its just a switch operated by a float that turns a light on in the dash to tell you that the coolant level is low. Not every car has it, I believe it was the up spec models that came out with it. If its giving you the s**t, disconnect it and bridge the terminals with a bit of wire to turn the light off, thats all I did with my AU until I got a new switch.
