I have a '99 AU Falcon and some lovely person decided to crack open my petrol flap and poor a little water in. I have no idea how much. What's the best way to avoid even more damage to my car?

Add Ethanol to the fuel. This will allow the water to dissolve in the petrol and be drawn out of the tank. Although this can damage the rubber and plastic components in the fuel system over the long term it shouldn't do too much damage for the short time it would take to break the hopefully small amount of water that was put into your tank.

At $1.30+ per litre I certainly wouldn't be in a hurry to waste whatever fuel was left in the tank...

just take the fuel line off from under the car and tunr the ign on.. this hould activate the pump and pump the fuel out, into a container of course..
let it sit for while and the water "should" sink to the bottom as it is heavier than petrol, then put the petrol back in..

I'm not exactally sure where the pick-up point in the fuel tank is, but it's rarely down the very bottom of the tank so that it doesn't pick up all the crap sitting on the bottom. That said, all, or some of the water will be sitting below the pick-up. So if you pump the tank as dry as you can with the fuel pump, there's likely to be water left in the tank which will mix itself with the fuel when you drive the car again. Plus if you pump the fuel out with the fuel pump, you run the risk of running the pump dry and then wasted tank of fuel would have looked cheap in comparison to a new pump. |

This is what I have heard too but I cannot remember the amount of metho to mix for a certain volume of fuel. But yeah, it would help burn off the water.

Methylated spirits is Ethanol
The reason it's called "Methylated" is because they add a small amount of Methanol (which is highly toxic) in an attempt to stop people drinking it.

personally if I had to dump a tank of fuel to stop any expensive damage to my car in the long term I wouldn't worry about 80 odd bucks in the short term....

Certainly if you make a habit of adding ethanol to your fuel then you'll eventually be looking down the barrel of fuel system damage but as a once-off measure it's not going to do any appreciable harm.

yeah but the thing is how do you tell how much water is in there so decide how much ethanol to put in???

Bloody tight a***!! As said, $70 / $80 of fuel is nothing compared to a rebuild. |
